Brief Summary of Work for
this Position
The Watson College of Education’s Elementary Education Program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington
(UNCW) is seeking to hire a full-time nine-month, non-tenure track Lecturer to begin August 2023. Responsibilities include teaching four
courses per semester in elementary arts education, elementary social studies education, and/or the supervision of field experience students
and interns in the undergraduate and graduate elementary programs. The Lecturer position is initially a one-year fixed term appointment with
the possibility of renewal year-to-year based on the needs of the department.
We seek a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative
colleague who is passionate about teacher education. Successful candidates have a strong background in elementary arts education and/or
elementary social studies education. They demonstrate a commitment to inclusive pedagogy, including teaching from a diversity and equity
perspective. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a record of teaching in diverse modalities, including online synchronous and
asynchronous formats.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
* Master’s degree in
education with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework closely related to arts education, social studies education, curriculum and
instruction, or elementary education at the time of employment.
* K-6 public school teaching experience.
* Experience supervising or
mentoring preservice and/or beginning teachers.
* Demonstrated evidence of how teaching, research, service, and/or community engagement
contribute to building equitable, diverse, and inclusive communities.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills &
Experience
* 3+ years of K-6 public school teaching experience.
* Experience teaching methods courses in elementary arts
education and/or elementary social studies education.
* Evidence of successful teaching experience in face-to-face and online learning
environments.
* Evidence of successful preservice teacher supervision and knowledge of edTPA and the Candidate Preservice Assessment of
Student Teaching (CPAST) assessment tool.
* Experience teaching in and/or engaging with underserved communities and diverse
populations.
* Demonstrate commitment to preparing teachers to work with diverse student populations.
* Earned doctorate in arts
education, social studies education, or other related field in education by the time of employment.
Primary Function of
Organizational Unit
The Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education is a community of
professional educators dedicated to the preparation of teachers and other professionals who have the knowledge, skills and dispositions to
work with children from early childhood through middle grades, students with special needs and their families. It values the integration of
current theory, research and professional expertise from multiple disciplines and perspectives to inform practices that enable all learners
to reach their full potential.
The department provides opportunities for students to develop as educational leaders and advocates for
the children and families they serve. It develops, implements and coordinates programs leading to undergraduate degrees and/or licensure in
birth through kindergarten education, elementary, middle grades and special education (general and adapted tracks) as well as graduate
degrees and/or licensure in elementary, middle grades and language and literacy.

The Watson College of Education (WCE) (www.uncw.edu/ed) is
a rapidly growing college with over 65 tenure-track faculty members working in undergraduate and master’s programs in the Department of
Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education and the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and
Secondary Education, and master’s and doctoral programs in the Department of Educational Leadership. It offers several international study
programs, a newly developed laboratory school, and maintains partnerships with numerous school districts, community colleges, and
colleges/universities in the region.
