The Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California (USC/ISI) seeks a collaborative, resourceful, and motivated leader to serve as a Research Director of the Computational Systems and Technology Division. Reporting to the Deputy Director, Computational Systems and Technology, the Research Director will lead transformational research, navigating the nuances and technical tasks of projects while effectively motivating and managing research staff.
The Information Sciences Institute, a unit of the Viterbi School of Engineering, is a global leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, computer networks, cybersecurity, medical informatics, and other computing and communications technologies. ISI’s 400 faculty, professional staff, and graduate students carry out extraordinary information sciences research at three distinct locations-Marina del Rey, California; Arlington, Virginia, where this position will be located; and Waltham, Massachusetts.
USC Viterbi School of Engineering, consistently ranked among the top ten engineering schools in the nation, is achieving new heights through research and educational leadership in crucial realms of technology and innovation: information sciences, biomedical engineering, and homeland security, among others. ISI is the largest research institute in Viterbi and brings in approximately half of the School’s external research funding.
The Computational Systems and Technology division at ISI conducts research in domain specific computer architecture, AI-enabled EDA tools, heterogeneous and edge computing, and application specific intelligent computing, and hardware security. As an applied research lab, the Division’s work spans the creation and maturation of ideas from academic conception to applied research prototypes, including ASIC fabrication and deployment in test environments. As the Division continues to grow and diversify, the Research Director will be expected to develop and execute new research ideas, demonstrating the ability to scale prototype systems to real-world problems. The Research Director will also partner with Division leadership to help grow the strong existing research funding, including identifying new sources of funding.
