The Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) program at Penn Graduate School of Education is an in-service teacher
education program that offers students the ability to earn a master’s degree and/or teaching certification while working full-time. UTR is
organized around issues of equity, social justice, and anti-racism as well as research-based frameworks of teaching and learning.
UTR
seeks an instructor who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity, with a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring
that enhances the work of the program and attracts and retains a diverse student body. We are seeking an instructor for School and Society
(see the course description below).
School and Society, (Virtual or In-person, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025): This course provides
students with an opportunity to investigate the philosophical underpinnings, social context, and current discourse of education and
schooling in the United States. By historically linking the development of educational initiatives to notions of power, nation building, and
citizenship, this class furthers an understanding of the assumptions about the purpose of education within this democratic nation, and its
role(s) within our current social and political climate. Discussions of differential access to power and resources are central to this
class, providing a forum for critically exploring educational policy, teaching practices, and the purposes of education that are intimately
connected to the social stratification and reproduction.
Responsibilities:
Design course syllabus, assignments, lessons, and
activities to meet course and program goals
Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students
Assess
student progress and provide timely and constructive feedback
Collaborate with other instructors and program leadership to ensure a
cohesive learning experience
Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance
Communicate
effectively with students, colleagues, and program leaders
