Job Summary
Provide leadership in the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling, and evaluating of perfusion services at UCSF, as well as all responsibilities of a staff perfusionist providing cardiopulmonary and mechanical circulatory support for patients with emphasis on complex procedures, including support for heart failure and non-cardiac practices and level 1 trauma support.
Direct responsibility for the management of the perfusion team: to include management of staff’s call and work schedules to ensure 24/7 coverage of perfusion services for pediatric and adult patient populations. Manages the contracts for external perfusion services. A regular cadence for staff meetings, timely communication, development of unit goals to include yearly staff evaluations and feedback for staff development. This role will implement one-three and five-year strategic plans and growth. It also provides clinical support to monitor and control extracorporeal circulation devices during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and other related procedures as required to support or support for patients with emphasis on complex procedures, including support for heart failure and non-cardiac practices and level 1 trauma support. Manages perfusion services 24/7.
Manages the three and five-year strategic plans and growth. It also provides clinical support to monitor and control extracorporeal circulation devices during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and other related procedures as required to support or replace the cardiopulmonary/circulatory function. Chief Perfusionist will service as clinical call back-up as needed replace the cardiopulmonary/circulatory function. This position represents the department and hospital on committees.
Manages UCSF perfusionists such as hires, trains, assigns work, manages, and evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of the UCSF perfusionists meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
With general oversight from the Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery and the Patient Care Director for Perioperative Services, the Chief of Perfusionist is responsible for the development and operation of Perfusion Services to include administration, technical and organizational aspects following applicable federal, state, and general hospital rules/regulations, policies, and procedures. These include but are not limited to accreditation, teaching, orientation and staffing, and the overall day-to-day operations of the Service. Provides staff with the resources necessary to perform their roles safely and competently. Effectively leads the team while promoting efficiency in the utilization of both personnel and non-personnel resources. Works with the Chief, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Perfusion staff to ensure a quality-based, customer-oriented workflow. Operates extracorporeal circulation equipment and prepares and administers blood products and prescription solutions through bypass circuitry.
This role will provide operational support and collaborative leadership, including implementing the strategic plan, interacting with Finance, service line leaders and other key stakeholders for program development and growth. As the Chief Perfusionist, you will develop strong collaborative relationships with physicians and other teams. This role implements and sustains UCSF’s pillar goals, standards of behavior, and philosophy to shape optimal care model planning and management and efficiency initiatives. The Chief Perfusionist will develop a culture that drives quality, patient safety, intra-department teambuilding, intradisciplinary collaboration, and shares responsibility for compliance with regulatory bodies. The role is responsible for providing leadership, direction, mentoring, and developing strategies to promote individual CTM’s professional growth and staff recruitment, retention, and recognition.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
Perioperative Services is a large and complex department with multiple operating rooms, procedural areas, and support services. Perfusion services supports clinical operations for the Perfusion Adult and Peds including additional critical administrative functions. This department works in partnership with other departments across the system to ensure alignment of perioperative daily operations, and additional duties as required.
