DESCRIPTION
Faculty members of the Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences treat women with pelvic floor disorders such as pelvic organ prolapse, and urinary and fecal incontinence. The Alperin laboratory (https://alperinmlab.org) is focused on understanding the pathophysiology of these conditions. Specifically, we investigate the impact of pregnancy, maternal birth injury, menopause, radiation, and aging on the structure, function, and regenerative potential of pelvic and lower urinary tract soft tissues and how pathological alterations in these tissues contribute to the development of pelvic floor disorders. In addition, we explore the role of novel biomaterials in pelvic and lower urinary tract soft tissues regeneration.
Under supervision, incumbent will perform structural, histological, molecular, cellular, and functional analyses of human and animal tissue, as well as in vivo animal experiments. Secondly, incumbent will be responsible for the organization and presentation of the collected experimental data. Additional duties include laboratory management, instructing trainees in the laboratory on basic activities related to tissue dissection and preparation for microscopic, biochemical, cellular, and mechanical examination or testing. Responsibilities also involve preparation and maintenance of various biological media for research activities; operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; ensuring laboratory safety, maintaining laboratory inventory; and collection and transportation of biological tissues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge as required in a Bachelor’s degree in biology/life sciences or a combination of education and experience.
Hands-on experience with in vivo animal experiments and handling of laboratory animals and various biospecimens.
Hands-on experience with molecular biology experimental techniques, including but not limited to Western blots, qPCR, trascriptomics, proteomics, cell culture gel electrophoresis and microscopy.
Knowledge of laboratory safety including biohazard handling & disposal techniques, & ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.
Ability to work with human tissue and transport biological tissue. Willingness to travel to the hospitals to collect and transport human tissue samples, collected from the research subjects in the operating room.
Good computer skills, & experience with various software packages including graphing, drawing programs, & Excel.
Good verbal & written communication.
Ability to take initiative & handle responsibility.
Good interpersonal skills to be effective in communicating & interacting with a variety of people within a large laboratory setting & in administrative components within & outside the University.
Experience working with a variety of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to centrifuges, autoclaves, cryostat, microscopes.
Good organizational skills; ability to maintain a clean laboratory, tissue and supply inventory; ability to place/manage purchasing orders
Ability to inject and collect tissues from laboratory animals.
Hands-on experience with preparation of solutions/media, & immunohistochemistry techniques.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of rodent anatomy and reproductive functions.
Experience working with epifluorescent and confocal microscopes.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must be willing to work with human tissue and transport biological tissue.
Must be willing to work with biohazardous and radioactive materials.
Must be willing to work evenings and/or weekends as needed to accommodate experiments.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 – $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 – $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
