2024 Summer Intern – Instrument Development – Material Compatibility
Department Summary
The Material and Compatibility team employs diversified knowledge of material science and/or chemical engineering principles to study material and chemical interaction problems in complex medical device systems involving hardware, chemicals and reagents. Material compatibility risks are assessed using analytical, instrumentation and simulation tools and mitigated by deploying engineering and scientific solutions. Material compatibility tests are set up with materials and chemicals of various hazards and toxicity levels. The team supports development and manufacturing activities in evaluating material compatibility issues.
This internship position is located in Tucson, AZ on site.
Key Responsibilities
Characterization of multiple materials and chemicals
Predict potential interaction issues by using analytical, instrumentation and simulation tools.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Who You Are (Required)
Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (must be at least a Senior or going into Senior Year)
Must be pursuing a Master’s Degree
Must be pursuing a PhD Degree
Required Degree:
Material Science, Material Engineer or Chemistry degree
Minimum required experience and qualifications
Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university during the program calendar year 2024.
Must have a 3.0 GPA. Please attach a copy of your transcript in order to be considered for this internship opportunity.
Minimum availability of 12 weeks.
Previous experience in the job duties listed, either through course work or industry/academia.
Participation in student organizations and/or other leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of common and specialized materials such as thermoplastics, metals, coatings, composites, elastomers, fluoropolymers and adhesives used within the industry for fluidics systems.
Chemistry and engineering knowledge of materials, as well as knowledge of classical mechanics such as fluids, heat and mass.
Familiar with ISO/ASTM standard methods for evaluating materials and chemical compatibility, IEC & USP.
Operation of analytical instruments in lab environments.
Operation of engineering simulation software such as Ansys, Comsol and Solidworks.
Data processing and analysis.
Technical writing skills to produce technical documents and presentations.
Microsoft Office tools, statistical analysis (e.g., Minitab), Statistical Process Control (SPC), LabView.
