The Pennsylvania State University is seeking an Advanced Associate/Full Professor and Department Head for Education Policy Studies (EPS) Department in the College of Education. In alignment with the College’s commitment to “combat and actively dismantle persistent, both cloaked and visible system racism,” this position has an explicit focus on anti-racist and transformative scholarship and praxis in K/K-12 leadership, educational policy, higher education, and student affairs. The Department Head serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of EPS and is expected to provide dynamic, collaborative leadership, promote academic and research excellence, advance innovation, and ensure the overall success and growth of the Department.
A successful candidate will have a strong research profile, who values research and scholarship, and has experience applying for and receiving external grant funding. The person must value both high quality undergraduate and graduate education, who understands schools and how they work and can teach in areas that we have required courses including K12 and/or higher education policy. They should understand schools and education institutions as organizations, the role, and responsibilities of leaders in K12 and/or higher education, and the implications of policy on K12 and/or higher education practices. The department head should serve as a mentor of junior, associate, and fixed term faculty, including guiding faculty through the promotion and tenure process. EPS seeks a strong advocate for our department who communicates the strengths and needs of the department, programs, and faculty with the College and University and who is invested in our culture. A successful candidate is innovative and entrepreneurial including an ability and interest in reinvigorating programs for efficiency and competitiveness with peer institutions as well as collaboration/efficiency/synergy across the department.
Required qualifications: earned doctorate in Education Policy, Education Theory, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field (e.g., Counseling, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, History, Geography, Human Development, Public Policy); evidence of an accomplished and robust program of research; demonstrated evidence of external funding to support research; demonstrated evidence of a commitment to equity-oriented approaches to teaching and advising, including a willingness to teach online and residentially; and evidence of, collaboration with and mentorship/advisement of students in research. Applicants should be an advanced associate professor or full professor.
Preferred Qualifications: prior leadership and budgetary experience in a post-secondary, K-12, academic foundation settings, or other analogous organizations.
