Dr. Michael VanElzakker’s research laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging is seeking post-doctoral applicants who are interested in neurology and clinical neuroscience research, and have expertise in fMRI related techniques.
This is an ideal position for an individual who earned a PhD in a neuroimaging laboratory, and is interested in gaining experience in a lab that conducts neuroimaging but also integrates multiple other biomedical research techniques and forms of data.
Our laboratory focus is on infection-associated health conditions such as Long-COVID, chronic fatigue syndrome, and post-treatment Lyme disease. Our laboratory is focused on fMRI, MRS, and PET neuroimaging, but we manage a number of projects analyzing blood, saliva, skin biopsy, and autonomic testing. An interest in bioinformatics and data management is a plus.
Our current neuroimaging projects include:
• 7T MRI study of chronic illness. We use in-scanner vagus nerve stimulation to probe functional connectivity, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of neuroinflammation-related metabolites, and a technique similar to arterial spin labeling to measure cerebrospinal fluid flow volume and velocity at the 4th ventricle.
• Dual PET-MR study of Long-COVID and chronic illness. We collect PET radioligand uptake data measuring glial activation, MRS, and an fMRI cognitive task.
• Both of these two neuroimaging projects collect large amounts of neuroimaging data within a single scan session, and our participants often return for multiple studies. Therefore, there is an excellent opportunity to integrate and analyze data from multiple modalities.
Current other projects include:
• Blood draw study of live neutrophil behavior, hypercoagulation, and inflammatory markers in chronic illness.
• Sleep data recorded by an overnight wearable, and pupillometry in chronic illness.
• Skin biopsy study of microbiome and immune contributors to small-fiber polyneuropathy in chronic illness.
Looking for someone to join the lab whose expertise is in neuroimaging but is interested in other modalities, and who is naturally organized, confident with technology, and detail-oriented, and has compassion for frustrated sick people.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
• Experience running neuroimaging studies
• Extensive experience in fMRI analysis, and ability to work with or rapidly pick up multiple analysis suites such as FreeSurfer, FSL, SPM, AFNI, PETsurfer
• Experience running an MRI console and facilitating human fMRI study visits
• Must have very strong written and verbal communication skills
• Must be driven to work productively under minimal supervision
• Must be proficient with computers and databases, and be able to troubleshoot and problem-solve independently
• Capable of being friendly and communicative with labmates and study participants, and assertive when confronted with obstacles
• Experience with Linux, coding, statistics, and bioinformatics (e.g., LabKey) is a plus
• Experience using a pipettor and general wetlab skills, or interest in learning, is a plus
• These are underserved patient groups, and special notice is given to applicants who are interested in a career that includes working with such patients
• Please write a cover letter that is specific to this lab’s missionEDUCATION:
Doctorate degree required (neuroimaging preferred).
