Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, Blood Donor Services, the Lead Apheresis Technician provides leadership, training and daily supervision of the donor center staff to ensure the team functions as a cohesive unit. Provides support to nurse manager and nursing staff on special projects. Assists in developing and updating SOP’s as well as training all staff on changes in SOP’s. In the absence of a nurse, may assume charge responsibility as appropriate. Performs manual and automated blood collection procedures. Ensures the safety of the donor and the safety of the blood collected. Proven excellent customer service skills. Ability to work independently and serve as resource for donor center staff. Balances production, donor care and quality requirements to meet annual blood collection goals.
Performs any or all facets of the Donor Center donor processes, as needed and as training progresses:
• Coordinates training/trains of staff in all areas.
• Assesses trainee performance and competencies and provides nurse manager with trainee evaluations on a regular basis.
• Approves training completion and provides nurse manager with completed training packet.
• Maintains staff competency records.
• Assesses collection staff’s skills through direct observation, testing and demonstration.
• In conjunction with nursing staff, performs competency reviews as assigned by nurse manager.
• Communicates any staff re-training needs to the nurse manager along with a re-training plan.
• In conjunction with the nurse manager, follows up with staff regarding errors, non-compliance and/complaints and provides the necessary coaching
and/or re-training or other action.
• Assists as needed with ensuring that all staff are up to date in completing departmental/hospital trainings.
• Participates in the development of training tools.
• Performs all duties and tasks related to the collection and processing of whole blood, platelet and double red cell donors.
• Performs all duties and tasks related to blood component processing.
• In conjunction with staff scheduler and nurse manager, coordinates and/or revises daily staff assignments.
• Consults and collaborates with marketing specialists and nurses regarding automated collections issues and scheduling.
• Reviews and calculates the RBC and plasma loss in apheresis donors. Maintains accurate apheresis records.
• Troubleshoots problems with apheresis machines and with the direction of the nursing team, coordinates repairs.
• Efficiently and accurately performs donation entries at intervals throughout the day.
• Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal donor care. Assists in the management of supplies and equipment.
