The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration’s (MDOT SHA) is recruiting for a Contract Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician III) position located in District 5 (Anne Arundel and St. Mary’s Counties). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.
Nature of work: The Contract Inspector will oversee all aspects of work done by contractors such as guardrail installation and repair, paving, highway lighting, herbicide spraying, tractor mowing, tree and brush cutting, inlet repairs, mechanical roadway sweeping and crack sealing. The specific duties this of position include, maintaining daily inspector and construction work records and performing maintenance and construction work in areas such as highways, ramps, buildings, parking areas, bridges, and snow removal. The Contract Inspector will ensure that all materials and equipment are used correctly and that the project is done in a timely manner according to the contract’s special provisions and Maryland specifications and standards. This position will be required to assist the District Operations Engineer with inspection of District Maintenance Contracts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selection Qualifications: One (1) year of experience in maintenance and/or construction inspection.
Preferred Qualification
The ideal candidate should possess good mathematics and computer software skills.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.
2. Applicants who possess an Associates Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the required experience.
Candidates must obtain a Class B CDL motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland within 6 months of hire.
Candidates selected into this position will be required to pass the following certifications prior to completion of the probationary period:
Employees in this class are considered essential and must be available for 24-hour emergency call up with a response time of less than one (1) hour.
Employees will serve a six (6) month probationary period with the possibility of probation being extended up to twelve (12) months.
Position is safety sensitive and subject to Drug/Alcohol testing as stated in MDOT Substance Abuse Policy.
