The Role:
The Hospital Director is accountable for the daily operations of the hospital(s) in support of policies, goals, and objectives of the company. Areas of responsibilities encompass operational planning, creating an optimal client experience, training of non-clinical staff, all scheduling, interviewing, hiring, and corrective actions including terminations, if necessary, of assigned staff, safety and security of staff, clients and patients, and the review/evaluation/analysis of departments/disciplines.
The title of Hospital Director will be assigned to those individuals directly overseeing the daily operations of a single hospital producing over $6M in annual revenue or overseeing more than one hospital location.
Responsibilities:
Facilitate and ensure effective communication and information flow with corporate teams, hospital departments and shifts.
Ensure compliance and accountability for all standard hospital operating procedures and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
Accountable for client and referring veterinarian satisfaction.
Engage in real-time resource allocation to develop staff schedules (clinical and non-clinical) to assure maximum productivity and service while managing labor against budget.
Work in collaboration with the hospital medical director to ensure effective deployment of medical services.
Regularly assess the efficient and effective flow of clients and pets through/in the hospital while also ensuring proper care from arrival through discharge and follow-up.
Evaluate the needs for the departments and recommend appropriate resources to meet those needs (equipment, staffing, etc.).
Ensure all facilities are clean, attractive, functional, safe (OSHA compliant) and hospitable for staff, patients and clients.
Ensure all equipment is appropriate and in good working order and receives regular required maintenance.
Collaborate with regional leadership to implement the company’s strategic plan at the local level. Work with national and regional leadership to develop and implement a strategic plan for the local hospital.
Responsible for profit and loss (P&L) management of the local hospital(s) with direct influence on how resources are allocated.
Evaluate financial and benchmarking information/measurements to ensure best management of the business and achievement of business goals.
Participate in the budget process and manage hospital expenses.
Work in collaboration with corporate teams in finance, human resources, marketing, supply management, and business development to ensure the hospital’s goals are met.
Establish “reasonable authority” in managing local employees that otherwise report directly to other management teams. Work collaboratively with other regional management teams in supervising these employees.
Develop and build hospital teams. Encourage and build mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members, incorporating the company’s vision, mission and core values.
Initiate recruitment with Talent Acquisition/People and Organization of approved requisitions. Supervise recruitment, interview and hiring for all open staff positions and doctors (in collaboration with the Medical Director).
Set production and performance standards and follow-up through monitoring, assessing, reviewing and evaluating employee performance (non-clinical performance) based on established standards.
In collaboration with the Medical Director, schedule and participate in timely doctor performance reviews.
Ensure appropriate training for all department(s) staff including an exceptional understanding and delivery of customer service and hospitality.
Develop and facilitate appropriate staff/department meetings.
Work in collaboration with the regional VP of Operations to facilitate change management in the hospital.
Serve as mentor and coach for any/all staff requiring development and assistance in non-clinical matters (supervising, relationships, etc.).
In collaboration with the Medical Director, manage doctor staff and participate in performance reviews and disciplinary actions
Cultivate employee motivation and solicit feedback from employees regularly.
Education, License and Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree required, MBA preferred
5 + years in a leadership role within operations to include people management and P&L responsibility
Skills and Experience:
Demonstrated managerial experience including staffing, coaching and performance management and employee relations
Demonstrated effectiveness with resource allocation and process improvement
Strong understanding of financial statements and budgeting
Must possess and demonstrate effective leadership qualities
Ability to promote effective communication and collaboration amongst team members
Strong team building skills
Demonstrated professionalism in all interactions
Proven ability to lead by example
