*Position Summary: * The Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation of Winston
Salem Inc. (AARF-WS) is a nonprofit, charitable 501(c)3 organization. *AARF-WS is a leading animal rescue agency in the greater Winston Salem area and is seeking an Executive Director to join its talented and dedicated team.*
Having recently opened a new, state-of-the-art 6,000 sq. ft. facility, AARF-WS is ready to welcome and support its next Executive Director to lead the agency and its team into its next stage of growth and development. It’s an exciting time to be with AARF of Winston Salem!
The Executive Director is responsible for the organization’s consistent and overall achievement of its mission, goals, and financial objectives. Additionally, the Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors, assisting them in the development of plans and policies to enhance the mission.
*About AARF of Winston-Salem: * Established in 1995, AARF-WS is a highly respected and recognized animal rescue organization in the greater Winston
Salem, NC area. The mission of AARF-WS is to improve the lives of cats and dogs while strengthening the human-animal bond. AARF-WS accomplishes this by rescuing and helping to prevent further cruelty to animals, advancing their welfare and protection, and encouraging the relationship between people and animals to improve the quality of life for both.
AARF-WS believes in the long-term relationship between pets and their loved ones, taking great care in the matching of cats and dogs to their forever homes. AARF-WS facilitates the rescue and adoption of between 600-800 cats and dogs annually and is viewed as a leader in the animal rescue community.
AARF-WS is unique in that it will accept cats and dogs who may be facing challenging situations and significant medical issues and, therefore, more difficult to adopt. Through adoption, fostering, an aggressive spay/neuter program, animal care, and community outreach and education, AARF-WS helps to improve the health of the pet community which in turn improves the health of the entire community.
AARF-WS consists of a dedicated and purpose-driven team of staff, volunteers, donors, and a Board of Directors. In the summer of 2022 AARF-WS relocated to a new 6,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility that enables on-site veterinary care and additional community-building and programming. The team is ready to
welcome an Executive Director to this group of committed people who know and appreciate the joys and rewards of animal rescue, fostering, and adoption.
*Executive Director Job Description: * The primary responsibility of the
Executive Director is to carry out AARF-WS’s stated mission by managing its development and business operations. The ideal candidate is an experienced and authentic leader, relationship builder, and advocate. They should have the capacity to work collaboratively with the AARF-WS Board of Directors to develop and implement a strategic plan and articulate and execute operational policies and protocols to ensure organizational success.
Desired skills include leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting; knowledge of and commitment to accepted animal rescue and care standards; strong fundraising/development experience; skill and experience preparing and delivering public presentations and communicating effectively with a variety of audiences and stakeholders; and an understanding of business principles. A background in budget development and management is essential with an understanding of QuickBooks and donor development software or the ability and commitment to learning and gaining proficiency in such tools upon hire.
AARF-WS currently receives the majority of its funding from individuals via various fundraising events and direct appeals. It aspires to increase funding from local corporations and grants. The Executive Director will be a critically important liaison in the effort to raise funds to ensure ongoing financial stability and sustainability. Demonstrated accomplishments in fundraising – including the development of new relationships and successful cultivation, solicitation, and acquisition of donations, are required.
The Executive Director is responsible for leading, engaging, and developing a paid staff of about 12 full and part-time employees, a growing volunteer staff, and overseeing a $600,000 annual operating budget.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities: *
*1. Staff and Organizational Leadership*
• Implement the strategic goals and objectives of the organization and provide leadership toward the achievement of the organization’s philosophy, mission, annual goals, objectives, and growth
• Provide executive-level leadership of staff and volunteers; promote professional and technical development of staff
• Establish and promote a work culture that is inclusive, team-oriented and mission-driven
• Build effective working relationships with managers, staff, volunteers, vendors, and Board members
• Ensure standards and procedures are appropriately documented and followed for all core functions of the organization; promote health and safety standards
• Maintain AARF-WS’s Animal Shelter license granted by the NC
Department of Agriculture; manage AARF-WS’s relationship with regulatory agencies
• Ensure personnel policies and procedures conform to current local, state, and federal laws and regulations (including keeping required licenses current)
• Recruit, hire, train, and retain qualified and committed talent to support and drive the work of AARF-WS; conduct goal-setting and performance evaluations
*2. Financial*
• Ensure sufficient annual operating revenue is available and that development evolves to support needed growth
• Oversee accounting operations in the performance of payroll, accounts payable, and receivable functions; develop and maintain sound financial practices
• In conjunction with the Board of Directors, assist in developing an annual budget; manage the organization’s resources within budget guidelines; ensure effective management of the budget and be accountable for budget expenditures
*3. Development (Fundraising) and Community Outreach*
• Identify networking and donor cultivation opportunities (e.g., with local businesses and organizations, individuals, and grant funding agencies)
• Build and maintain effective relationships with donors, prospective donors, businesses, organizations, government agencies, and other supporters
• Generate funds to support current and future programs and operations
• Develop, implement, and oversee fundraising projects (special events, direct solicitations, grant-writing); help organize and delegate essential activities by engaging Board members and other volunteers
• Maximize public relations opportunities to enhance the image of AARF-
WS in the community via social media and other communications; ensure
AARF-WS’s mission, programs, and services are consistently presented with a strong, positive image.
*4. Animal Welfare and Advocacy*
• Monitor animal welfare issues and ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policy
• Provide administration of and guidance for all organizational programs that include, but are not limited to, running a NC licensed animal rescue organization, spay/neuter/vaccination initiatives, lost and found coordination, financial assistance support, and a connector to behavior and other resources
• Network with other local animal resource groups to build coalitions that promote animal welfare
*Minimum Qualifications: *
• Proven leadership ability with at least 3 years of managerial experience
• Proven ability to fundraise, including cultivation of financial gifts
• Ability to effectively interact with cats and dogs
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Comfortable working in a high-energy environment
• Strong ability to effectively prioritize and plan
• Strong interpersonal skills with proven written, presentation, and verbal communication skills
• Experience building and managing a budget
• Basic competency and comfort using word processing, database, operational management software, and social media tools
• Comfort and ability in the use of standard office equipment such as computers, laptops, phones, photocopiers, and printers
• Experience working in an animal rescue organization and knowledge of animal care standards and policies
• Experience working within the nonprofit sector
• A strong sense of innovation and creativity
• A calculated risk-taker
• Open to learning new things
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is preferred
