The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), the principal academic affiliate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, is seeking a full-time Associate Director of Microbiology Laboratories.
The successful candidate for the position will have a background in clinical microbiology in a university or large health system setting. Clinical duties for this position include working closely with the Directors Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratories to provide medical director oversight of all areas of the clinical microbiology, maintain competency of staff, and develop clinical test menus and quality programs. A successful applicant will work closely with the Division of Infectious Diseases and other clinical services through day-to-day clinical consultation and have a strong commitment to teaching fellows, residents, medical students, and medical technology students. Board certification by the American Board of Pathology or the American Board of Medical Microbiology is required.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine includes 28 full-time physicians and doctoral scientists, 10 of whom are in the Clinical Pathology and Molecular Pathology Divisions. The Microbiology Laboratories are centralized at Evanston Hospital and serve 5 hospitals, 20 immediate care facilities, and more than 100 physician offices. The Microbiology lab performs more than 500,000 tests per year and provides services in bacteriology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, mycology, virology, molecular diagnostics, and antimicrobial susceptibly testing. The Microbiology Laboratory has 23 FTE’s, state of the art technology including MALDI-TOF MS and molecular instrumentation, and was the first laboratory in North America to implement total laboratory automation for bacterial culture. The Department sponsors a longstanding and successful ACGME-accredited AP/CP pathology residency program, fellowships (with University of Chicago) in Medical Microbiology and Molecular Genetic Pathology, and Medical Technology school on site.
