The Manufacturing
Training and Technology Center (MTTC), School of Engineering is seeking a part-time (approx. 20 hours per week) Microsystems/MEMS Process Engineer.
The Microsystems/MEMS Process Engineer is a vital member of our advanced technology team, responsible for training, and supporting customers in developing and optimizing microsystems and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication processes. This position will play a key role in supporting internal (students, researchers) and external (companies, startups) cleanroom users to continuously improve processes, procedures, and education methodologies.
Under general supervision, plans and conducts engineering research requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
Responsibilities Include:
1. Process Development: Conduct research, experimentation, and analysis to develop novel fabrication processes. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate design specifications into scalable process flows, ensuring manufacturability and reliability.
2. Process Optimization and Characterization: Continuously improve existing process technologies based on customer needs and wants. Implement tool qualification tests, statistical process control (SPC) methodologies to monitor and analyze key process, equipment and environmental parameters.
3. Equipment Selection and Qualification: Evaluate and support the selection of appropriate equipment and materials to improve processes and cost. Oversee the qualification and installation of new equipment, ensuring its proper integration.
4. Process Characterization: Design, execute experiments and document results to characterize process repeatability, metrology methods (calibration, gauge studies), including equipment capabilities. Analyze and interpret data to identify process variations, root causes of failures, and areas for improvement.
5. Documentation and Reporting: Generate comprehensive process documentation including process instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and engineering specifications. Prepare technical reports and present findings to internal teams and external stakeholders. Assist the Director with proposal writing including new equipment acquisitions and existing equipment modifications.
6. Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with MTTC stakeholders to align process capabilities with project requirements. Provide technical training, expertise and support.
7. Quality and Safety Assurance: Ensure compliance with UNM standards, regulatory requirements, and quality control protocols. Participate in failure analysis investigations and contribute to corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).

Bachelor’s degree in a directly related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
