Neurology at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Science Center (HSC) seeks a motivated HS Research Scientist 1 to conduct research with Dr. Afshin Divani and the Department Chair. The successful applicant will be assisting in the research of neuroprotective mechanisms in traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, and intracerebral hemorrhage.
The selected candidate is expected to work with the PI in the planning, development, and implementation of laboratory studies; design and independently execute standard research methods, protocols, and procedures; analyze, evaluate, and interpret research data and prepare summations and inferences for review by the investigator; contribute as appropriate to the development of summary reports presentations, manuscripts associated with original research findings, and grant writings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Perform small animal surgeries, as well as pre- and post-op care (30%)
* Formulate relevant pre-clinical study designs related to stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
* Performed neurological and behavioral assessments related to stroke, ICH, and TBI (30%)
* Perform immunohistochemistry and other molecular biology-related procedures such as PCR, cell culture, Western blot, etc. (20%)
* Order and maintain laboratory supplies
* Participate in relevant data collection and analysis (10%)
* Participate in training other staff in performing relevant laboratory procedures when needed
* Participate in scholarly activities such as conference abstracts, manuscripts, and grant proposal preparation
* Strong commitment to working with the laboratory PIs in designing and implementing pre-clinical studies related to stroke, ICH, and TBI
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
* Familiar with animal models of stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and TBI
* Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
* Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and the safe use of laboratory equipment.
* Knowledge of experimental procedures, protocols, SOPs, and preparation techniques within the specialty area.
* Familiar with related laboratory techniques such as histopathological, Western Blot, PCR
Bachelor’s degree; no previous experience required.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree (in Neuroscience, Physiology, Biology, or related field), MS, PhD, MD, or DVM with related experience is preferred.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills

* Ability to multi-task and meet time-sensitive deadlines
* Ability to work effectively in a team and with a diverse community
* Being independent, motivated, and organized
* Relevant computer software and MS Office Skills
