Who We Are
The Michigan Neuroscience Institute was established in 1955 to bring together investigators from across the University of Michigan campus to probe the mysteries of the brain on a cellular, molecular, and behavioral level. Its 140 faculty and affiliate members seek to understand of the function and dysfunction of the human brain.
Responsibilities*
Facilities Support and Coordination
Liaise with medical school facilities to maintain and repair MNI buildings and labs.
Submits work orders to ensure buildings, lab spaces, and equipment are in good working order.
Function as the MNI contact for all facilities issues and acts as the MNI lab emergency contact during incidents with EHS, the fire marshal, DPSS, and others.
Oversee laboratory systems and operations, and interfaces with Medical School facilities, ULAM, and outside contractors on scientific systems including but not limited to aquatic fish systems, equipment maintenance, upgrades, and installations.
Liaises with faculty and EHS staff related to lab commissioning/decommissioning processes.
Fabrication of Specialized Equipment and Supplies
Participates in pre-experiment technical functions and engineering activities to construct neuroscience experiment equipment.
Technical functions may include, designing, testing, modifying, fabricating, assembling, or repairing of specialized equipment and systems.
Troubleshoots testing and data collection equipment, from an electronics and engineering perspective.
This requires knowledge of behavior testing chambers, probes for neural recording, optogenetics, and fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, among other technologies.
Freezer Team Lead
Coordinate regular freezer checks for MNI labs and monitor freezers for adequate space and freezer space planning.
Maintain and update MNI’s emergency freezer plans in the case of MNI freezer problems.
Space Oversight
Assists MNI Administrative Director with submitting the annual space utilization reports and survey to Medical School Facilities and manages internal data on space use and occupancy, including capital equipment inventories.
Neuroscience Lab Managers Community of Practice
Provides the framework for a Neuroscience Lab Managers’ community of practice by engaging with other personnel across neuroscience buildings and medical school on facilities and related process improvements and liaises with neuroscience lab managers to help establish best practices and support.
