Job Summary
Supervises the daily operations and activities of several research sites and studies for the Multitudes program, a collection of state-wide field research studies contributing to the development of a free, culturally and linguistically affirming early literacy screener for California public schools. Acts as technical advisor and resource for research activities. Works both onsite at UCSF and in a series of schools, with a high degree of autonomy. Provides supervision of staff according to established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Recommends changes to policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
The UCSF Dyslexia Center will offer California educators a free new tool to tailor teaching to every child’s strengths and learning differences. Multitudes will be a comprehensive platform that connects neuroscience research at the University of California with the needs of California public school students. The UCSF Dyslexia Center is developing a new digital tool, free for all California public schools, to aid in the early identification of Kindergarten and First Grade students who may face challenges learning to read. Early identification can lead to early intervention. With the right support, the experience of learning to read can be more equitable and successful for more California students. The ALBA Language Neurobiology laboratory in the UCSF Neurology Department’s Memory and Aging Center is directed by Dr. Maria Luisa Gorno Tempini. We study how language is organized into brain networks across the lifespan. Our group researches how language skills and brain regions are impacted by neurological conditions and how they reorganize in response. Our multidisciplinary team correlates behavioral research with multimodal neuroimaging techniques to understand the neural underpinning of higher cognitive functions such as speech, language, and memory. In particular, we research two syndromes: Primary Progressive Aphasia and Dyslexia. Dr. Gorno Tempini is also co-director of the UCSF Dyslexia Center and the UCSF|UC Berkeley Schwab Center for Dyslexia and Cognitive Diversity. These centers aim to eliminate the debilitating effects of developmental dyslexia while supporting the relative strengths of each individual. We develop best practice protocols to assess and diagnose children with dyslexia and other learning differences through a multimodal cognitive and neuroimaging program. We work closely with schools and educators to develop early interventions and educational strategies to help children with dyslexia thrive.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and a minimum of five years of experience, including three in a supervisory/lead role or equivalent experience/training.
- Strong skills in report preparation and research protocols.
- Strong skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, motivation of staff and team-building
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong computer competency and knowledge of communications and survey research software.
- Strong ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.
- Strong communication skills with a broad range of research partners and project team members
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of safety, legal, cultural, and regulatory requirements relative to school-based field research.
- Thorough knowledge of research principles, concepts, analyses, and operations being conducted at the Multitudes field sites.
- Thorough knowledge of local customs, facility management, and operations at school sites.
