The Department of Surgery has strong basic and translational science and research programs committed to finding treatments and cures for debilitating human diseases and injuries using human stem cells. The incumbent supports the goals of faculty members in this department by application of advanced methods of molecular biology and is responsible for seeking current and developing new techniques to culture placenta derived mesenchymal stem cells for preclinical and clinical trials working toward treatments for incurable diseases and in some instances enhancing overall quality of life. The incumbent directs the work of a complex laboratory on mesenchymal stem cell culture techniques, including oversight of technical staff, volunteers and graduate students, takes charge of the development and execution of multi-disciplinary projects and performs state-of-the-art, complex research projects in collaboration with academic supervisors. The incumbent researches and independently develops methods to translate findings to allow use of novel stem cell advancements into ongoing and future clinical trials. The incumbent consults with the academic supervisor and other academic or professional researchers on the nature and overall objectives to be achieved, advising them on the more difficult and problematic areas they may encounter and suggests solutions, when necessary provides training; contributes significant original/innovative ideas of judgment and discretion, initiative, and resourcefulness in making decisions about the research; authors and co-authors findings and newly developed methods in peer reviewed scientific journals, and presents at national and international scientific meetings and symposia. This position is integral to future program project and grant funding and to the success of the Department of Surgery in finding novel treatments to save the lives of patients with currently incurable diseases.
Funding for this position is confirmed, but not guaranteed, through 6/30/2024 with the possibility of extension through 12/31/2027.

Minimum Qualifications
* High degree of experience in isolating, characterizing and maintaining placenta stem cell lines of human and non-human origin.
* Experience in advanced cell biology and molecular biology techniques, including flow cytometry, histologic and immunofluorescence staining and in vitro cell tracking.
* Previous experience in stem cell derivation of human and non-human origin.
* Demonstrated experience working with multiple teams and balancing timelines and core needs.
* Experience in processing of clinical grade tissues and cells.
* Experience interacting with professionals in multiple disciplines.
* Excellent writing skills and previous experience in writing manuscripts, abstracts, and grant proposals.
* Excellent knowledge of computer applications: Microsoft Outlook, statistical software packages, spreadsheets – Excel, EndNote, Pubmed, Word, Image J, etc.
* Proven ability to communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in writing to academic and lay audiences.
* Excellent project management, research and data skills. Strong organizational, planning and communication skills. Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills. Ability to pay close attention to details.
* Proven ability to update collaborators with project details.
* Knowledge of cultural sensitivity with regard to different ethnic groups, as well as foreign study populations and collaborators.
Department Description
The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of surgical specialties. These include bariatric surgery, burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and oncologic surgery. The Department’s extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.
