DESCRIPTION
DEPARMENT OVERVIEW:
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is a world leader in using, innovating and providing cyberinfrastructure to enable advances and new discovery in science and engineering. Focusing on data-oriented and computational science and engineering applications, SDSC serves as an international resource for data cyberinfrastructure through the provision of software, hardware and human resources in multi-disciplinary science and engineering, and serves as a leadership national cyberinfrastructure Center to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and broader community.
The Research Data Services (RDS) division of SDSC is responsible for providing a full range of research computing needs including: co-location facility; server and virtualization hosting and management; networking; desktop support services; and data storage. RDS also includes a data initiatives team that provides backbone office capabilities for grant-funded activities and for regional, national, and international initiatives including the West Big Data Hub, EarthCube Office, the National Data Service, and GO FAIR US.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under supervision, incumbent will apply basic IT professional concepts, department/ unit and campus/medical center/OP policies and procedures to resolve routine issues in one or more IT areas of specialization. Incumbent will work on problems of limited scope. Incumbent will follow standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
Incumbent is responsible for operational support for the 19,000+ sq. ft. data center floor and supporting facilities, including high-end installations, archival systems operations and maintenance, visual inspections and 1st line emergency response triage and actions. Responsibilities include equipment mapping and monitoring, administering and maintaining an equipment database, installing and configuring networking hardware, monitoring electrical and cooling levels, and maintaining floor/ceiling structure and tiles.
Incumbent will work in conjunction with staff and vendors during all phases of planning and installation of systems, including coordination with vendors and UCSD personnel on both building facilities (power and environmental systems), as well as hardware/software installation for individual systems and/or large-scale computing clusters. Incumbent will support in various capacities the efforts of other UCSD/SDSC groups and divisions, including remote hands assistance, server installation and maintenance, and maintenance of onsite security systems and software.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Experience in computer room activities, including the installation and removal of HPC equipment and proper floor management. This requires a good knowledge of electrical and cooling specifications and the ability to measure and monitor them.
Basic knowledge of several areas of IT. Working experience and skill in the concepts, principles, codes, standards, techniques and procedures of system and network administration and a very broad comprehension of principles and practices in related technical specialties.
Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot basic problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Basic understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
Basic knowledge of computer security best practices and policies. Ability to put knowledge into practice.
Ability to define and diagnose complex system operational problems using information gathered from numerous sources (users, computers, system personnel).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 – $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 – $42.10
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
