Position Type:
Assistant Professor – Department of Education (Catholic Education specialty)
Position Type:
Regular
Salary Range:
$82,640 – $91,740: Based on years of experience.
Generous benefits offered: scu.edu/hr/benefits
Purpose:
Four commitments ground the mission of the Department of Education: Cura personalis, or the care for and growth of the whole person, which informs not just how we teach our teachers, but also how we expect our teachers to engage their own K-12 students; social justice, or the pursuit of educational equity through the preparation of teachers who deliver culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy that helps all students learn; transformation through the development of our students into equity-oriented teachers and agents of change; and diversity of faculty and students, who enrich K-12 schools, our teacher preparation program and scholarly research through their critical voices and perspectives. Our teacher preparation program Master of Arts in Teaching and Teaching Credential (MATTC) faculty have developed our teacher preparation program to embrace a more critical model of education, including programs specialized for Catholic Education, Catholic MATTC and ExCEL (Excellence in Catholic Education and Leadership). Our Department of Education endeavors to live out these commitments not only in its academic and scholarly pursuits, but especially in its K-12 school partnerships. Faculty teach courses at Santa Clara University’s main campus and our East San Jose campus, which hosts several K-12 schools serving students from an underserved and culturally rich Latinx neighborhood.
We are seeking a colleague who fully embraces our mission and seeks to actively carry it out in each facet of the position. Specifically, we invite applications for an Assistant Professor to lead the Catholic Education program and to serve as a tenure track member of our Department of Education. Applicants should have earned a PhD or related research degree (or anticipate having the PhD by the time of
appointment) and will have taught for multiple years in K-12 public and/or K-12 Catholic schools. The successful candidate should bring a record of scholarly research related to Catholic Education. We are especially interested in candidates who bring a “whole child” perspective to the work and who bring a contemporary, critical lens to our understanding of how to educate students, especially those from historically marginalized communities.
We seek candidates with experience working in racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse schools and communities, particularly through school-university partnerships. Although not required, candidates who would have an interest in connecting to our Latinx Research Center or who have some expertise in working in schools with large emerging bilingual populations should address this interest in their cover letter.
Basic Qualifications
The successful candidate will satisfy all of the following requirements:
1. Earned PhD in Education or related field, or anticipated by the time of appointment.
2. Outstanding teacher and a strong commitment to Catholic teaching and the preparation of the next generation of Catholic teachers.
3. Proven success for accomplishment in scholarship, commensurate with the level of appointment and anticipation of the tenure expectations of a university committed to a “teacher-scholar” model.
4. Committed to the mission of the university with an emphasis on anti-racism and a just and sustainable world.
5. Strong knowledge and experiences in the K-12 Catholic Education field.
6. Demonstrated ability to advise graduate students and contribute to overall program development.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
1. Experience working with diverse and marginalized communities in K-12
settings.
2. Evidence of successful college/university teaching.
3. Demonstrated ability to advise graduate students and contribute to overall
program development.
Applicants are expected to submit all the following documentation noted below.
Applications received by September 15, 2023 will receive full consideration;
applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
1. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
2. Cover letter addressing essential qualifications, scholarship agenda, and
teaching philosophy
3. Three samples of recent written work. Published work is preferred, but
recent work showcasing the applicants’ research direction is also
encouraged.
4. A statement demonstrating the candidate’s commitment to social justice,
anti-racism, and diversity. Candidates can speak about how their work,
research, and/or teaching contribute to our commitment to ensuring an
inclusive environment for students, staff and faculty, and in support of the
broader educational and social impact on the communities we serve.
5. Recent teaching evaluations, if available.
6. Names and contact information for four references. References will be
contacted at the finalist stage, and candidates will be told before references
will be contacted.
