Job Summary:
The College of
Education invites applications for a Department Head (12 month 0.80 FTE), with an accompanying appointment as a Tenured Associate or Full
Professor (9 month 0.20 FTE) position.
The successful candidate will be hired on a 12-month basis at 0.80 FTE as
Department Head in a professional faculty position, and on a 9-month appointment basis at 0.20 FTE at the rank of Associate Professor or
Professor. The incumbent will serve as Department Head for an initial period of 3-5 years at the discretion of the Dean, informed by
departmental voting elections. Upon completion of their service as Department Head, the incumbent has the option to continue employment as a
full-time academic faculty member at the College.
The faculty member will focus on K-12 education in Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies, or Literacy Education (or similar) with an emphasis on issues of multilingualism, equity, and social justice. The faculty member
will also serve as Department Head for a newly formed department focused on teaching and learning, with approximately 20 full- and part-time
academic/instructional faculty, 4 professional faculty, and 3-5 classified staff members.
The position will be an integral part of
the faculty by serving in a department head role that includes leadership across four program areas, faculty supervision, and budgetary
management. The primary roles of this position are: (a) planning and oversight of departmental budget and departmental income/expense, (b)
representation of the department at college and university levels, long-range planning and organization of curricula and departmental
academic offerings, (d) supervision of faculty and staff within the department. As a faculty member, they will provide expertise in
undergraduate and graduate teaching in their respective areas of expertise. The faculty member will also have a strong record of scholarly
success with promise of ongoing research contributions to areas of Mathematics, Science, or Literacy Education (or similar) with an emphasis
on multilingualism, equity, and social justice.

Key Responsibilities
80% Department
Head:
Supervision and Leadership
Furthers a culture of inclusive excellence within the department,
including building a collegial spirit and a sense of collective responsibility for the departments mission and for one another.
Coordinates department governance.
In collaboration with the faculty, makes decisions related to the delivery of the departments
instructional programs, and the advising, assessment and recruitment activities associated with those programs.
Mentors and adjudicates
in personnel matters and in relation to the professional development of faculty.
Schedules and coordinates faculty meetings, advisory
committee meetings, retreats, and program reviews.
Facilitates the management of space and facilities resources.
Responds to
questions/issues raised by students, public, etc.
Proactively promotes equity and inclusion within the department. The head will
advance inclusive excellence within the department, college, and university. The head will work actively to improve the departments culture
to make it more inclusive and take steps to make it more diverse.
Operations & Budgets
Oversees the budget and
maintenance.
Oversees hiring decisions.
Tracks budget status and income and expenditures.
Decides on graduate teaching
assistant (GTA) assignments.
Authorizes grant proposals and prior approval grant expenditure requests.
Personnel
Management
Supervises instructional faculty, program leads, and classified staff.
Approves instructional faculty
workload.
Mentors and assists faculty and facilitates their development.
In collaboration with the Dean, decides on raises.
Participates in P&T process for faculty advancement.
Coordinates recruitment of new faculty members in collaboration with program
faculty.
Conducts periodic reviews of faculty and annual reviews of all staff under heads direct supervision.
Department
Representative
Represents the department at all internal and external functions requiring or benefiting from department
participation.
At the Deans request, provides leadership in the departments development activities with Foundation and Alumni
organizations, with the goal of increasing gifts and benefactors to benefit the department, the college and/or faculty.
Serves on the
College of Education Leadership Team.

20% Associate/Full
Professor:
Teaching and Advising: Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and advising/mentoring
graduate students as appropriate in their scholastic academic, research, and professional development.
Research:
Conducting and publishing research in peer-reviewed outlets recognized as relevant to research conducted and demonstrative that the
individuals scholarship has (inter)national distinction. Writing and submitting grant proposals and securing external
funding.
Service: Providing active service to degree program, college, and university as well as through relevant
professional associations.
What You Will Need
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION AS DEPARTMENT
HEAD:
Earned Doctorate in mathematics, science, social studies, literacy education, or similar field with an emphasis on
multilingualism, equity, and social justice.
At least three years of leadership experience at the program or departmental level with
management responsibilities including responsibilities for hiring, training, assigning work, and managing and supervising performance of
staff.
Minimum of two years of interaction with formal K-12 school systems.
Significant record of achievement that merits
appointment as tenured Associate or Full Professor in the College of Education.
Demonstrated commitment to issues of equity and social
justice.
Evidence of ability to lead collaboratively in administrative, research, teaching, and service settings.
Demonstrated
policy development and/or maintenance experience at a program or departmental level in teacher education.
Extensive experience in
effectively managing large budgets.
Demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Research program in
mathematics, science, social studies, literacy education, or related field with an emphasis on multilingualism, equity, and social justice
as evidenced by published research.
Evidence of successfully integrating diversity and social justice in teaching practices at the
postsecondary level, including evidence of meeting needs of learners from underrepresented backgrounds.

Distinguished scholarly expertise in mathematics, science,
social studies, literacy education, or related field with an emphasis on multilingualism, equity, and social justice commensurate with the
rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Evidence of successfully
integrating diversity and social justice in teaching practices at the postsecondary level, including evidence of meeting needs of learners
from underrepresented backgrounds.
