Position Overview
The Floorhand’s job is to safely and efficiently provide the manual labor required to operate the equipment on the drill rig floor. This includes the operation of tongs and use of drilling slips to assemble and disassemble drilling pipe, as well as the use of hand tools, sledge hammers and large pipe wrenches to maintain and repair equipment. The Floorhand participates in a variety of activities which may include chipping and painting, physical movement of equipment, mixing of chemicals or greasing, oiling or washing of equipment, walls and floors. There are occasions when the Floorhand may work while suspended from a riding belt or while standing or sitting on various beams greater than 6 feet off the drill floor while attached to a secure structure with a safety harness and be called upon to lift items weighing 50 – 75 lbs. and items weighing 75 – 105 lbs. The Floorhand works under the supervision of the Driller or Assistant Driller. It is imperative that the Floorhand be able to grasp, follow and quickly respond to moderately complex instructions, and it is just as important that the Floorhand be able to give concise and specific instructions and directions to other crew members. The Floorhand generally works at least 12 hour days on a 14 days on/14 days off rotation. As such, he/she must be able to tolerate working in close quarters for extended periods of time. The Floorhand works both indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather. He/she is required to walk/transfer from boats/helicopters in all weather conditions including clear, sunny, windy, cold, rainy and turbulent conditions. The actual transfer to the rig may be done with the use of a personnel basket or a swing rope. The personnel basket may attain a height in excess of 100 feet above the water surface during transfer. When utilizing the swing rope to transfer to and from the rig, the employee must have good perceptual judgment to properly execute the swing. A Floorhand must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a Roustabout for Nabors Offshore Corporation or six months experience as a Floorhand for another drilling company, possess an intermediate level of mechanical knowledge and the ability to work with, around and on, as well as maintain rotary drill equipment and must be able to read and comprehend company reports, safety regulations, work orders and supply lists. A Floorhand must be able to clearly communicate over the telephone, PA system and face to face over the loud noises of the rig, be able to write numbers on the drill pipe, log mud weights coming out of the hole and the viscosity of the mud, any gas that is present, etc, as well as be able to perform simple math including addition and subtraction to determine and record fluid lost or gained, as well as to calculate the mud weight and viscosity and be able to wear respiratory protective devices. During rig up or down procedures and during repair times, the Floorhand may be called upon to climb on and off equipment, lift, carry and drag hoses, pumps and other equipment as well as use hand tools and sledge hammers from the floor to overhead heights and may be required to work while suspended off the rig floor or water with a safety harness. Many of the activities the Floorhand participates in are repetitive and monotonous; it is imperative that he/she stay alert and not be distracted. He/she works around and with extremely heavy and fast moving equipment. All employees are instructed to report any unsafe or potentially unsafe situations to their supervisor immediately. He/she must know when to go to the Driller before undertaking a task when he/she is in doubt about what to do or how to do it. For the most part, Floorhand activities are performed outside in a work space that is not protected by the environment. There may be times when the employee is required to perform tasks other than those specified here.
