LEAD Research Assistant- Channing/Harvard Cohorts Biorepository
General Summary/ Overview Statement:
The Channing Division of Network Medicine is a research division within the Department of Medicine at Mass General Brigham. Channing/Harvard Cohorts Biorepository (CHCB) is currently looking for one Lead Research Assistant (LRA).
Once trained, the LRA is responsible for monitoring and execution of biorepository projects for the distribution of biospecimens. Daily, she/he is responsible for coordinating with appropriate team members, investigators, and external study partners to execute projects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: No Direct Patient Care
1. Distribution: Responsible for organizing, assigning, and working on biorepository distribution projects. Shares advise on the project needs such as staffing requirements. Responsible for the oversight and coordination of the scheduling of all procedures.
2. Experimental Design and Coordination of Pilots: Once trained will work with upper management to plan internal method development experiments and coordinate pilot studies. Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols. Develops research methodologies.
3. SOPs Quality Assurance: Write, update, edit and train staff on Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs).
4. Quality Assurance: Exercises best practices for Quality Assurance (QA) and individual quality control (QC) measures for projects. Responsible for the design, execution, and oversight of lab activities regarding QA.
5. Training: Works in partnership with senior staff to plan, organize, train, and mentor biorepository personnel.
6. Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS): Once trained, contributes suggestions for workflow improvements to LIMS developers and then beta tests changes.
7. Troubleshoot Robotic Equipment: Once trained, maintains the Scinomix automated labeler.
8. Liaison Responsibilities: Meets with senior staff, writes detailed correspondence with collaborators to ensure the proper specifications for each project are met.
9. Biorepository Monitoring: Twice per week, oversees staff and assists with the monitoring of LN2. Every 8 weeks- responsible to be “On-Call” carrying a pager evening for one week and one weekend.
10. Personnel/Staffing: Supports, trains, orients, educates, and tracks lab assistant’s progress and competency. Alerts senior management to any issues or problems, as they arise, and makes recommendations for improvement. Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques.
11. Record Storage: Uses UNIX, Project Management Database, Laboratory Information Management System, to generate essential computer files and store records.
12. Shipping Projects: Documents, coordinates, and physical participates in the shipments of projects to designated laboratories using IATA approved shipping methods for Biological Safety Level II packages.
13. Supply oversight: Oversee staff who track and store supplies, place orders as needed.
14. Data Analysis: Performs advanced data analysis using advanced statistical techniques.
15. Fiscal Responsibilities: Monitors budget and participates in preparation.
16. Leadership: Works independently and confidently with little guidance from supervisor. Allocates work and coordinates the staffing and scheduling. In absence of Manager may assume full responsibility.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work takes place in both office and laboratory settings. Frequent exposure to liquid nitrogen (LN2) freezers, in basement locations (controlled air ventilation). Walking between the three sites; 221 Longwood (lab); 181 Longwood (freezer farm); and 665 Huntington Avenue (TH Chan HSPH- lab and freezer farm) is required. Exposure to human biological specimen and LN2 occurs daily.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Once trained, under the oversight of the Senior Research Laboratory and Biobank Manager, is responsible for training distribution personnel.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Will monitor budget and timelines to bring projects in on time and on budget. Delegates ordering supplies.

QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS required. PMP or other project management training preferred.
Skills and Competencies required.
* Advanced database management and overall computer skills, comfort with databases, software, and robotics.
* Proven ability to effectively supervise and train staff.
* Demonstrated analytical skills to problem solve effectively.
* Ability to identify problems and develop solutions.
Calm analytical demeanor during emergency response.
