The National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Program Manager is responsible for developing, promoting, creating a culture of innovation and delivering Meharry Medical College NSF I-Corps objectives in collaboration with the NSF I-Corps Southwest Hub at Meharry under the direction of the Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation. The candidate will be responsible for the following. (1) Coordinate NSF I-Corps training that will strengthen translational research across Meharry and drive academic innovator teams into the Hub I-Corps training programs. (2) Recruit underrepresented innovators with entrepreneurial interest and harness their talent in biomedical sciences at regional and national commercialization programs. (3) Support research, manage data and evaluate outcomes of programs, and comply with all reporting requirements. (4) Employ mentorship program to maximize recruitment of innovative teams and retention of key Hub activities. (5) Oversee preparation and dissemination of all marketing materials and social media outreach. (6) Ensure compliance with the NSF I-Corps Southwest Hub policies and guidelines; and (7) Help investigators translate laboratory discoveries to the market and develop direction for the expansion of the innovative ecosystems and commercialization.
Daily Operations
• Coordinate and manage NSF I-Corps programing efforts across the Southwest Hub. Develop and offer comprehensive integrated instructional and entrepreneurial training courses that are consistent with the NSF I-Corps objectives. Scheduling and organization of virtual regional courses; attending in-person and virtual sessions, and providing logistical support. Timely generation of required deliverables within allocated budget and time. Ensure meeting program reporting and publication requirements according to NSF guidelines.
• Interact with academic biomedical and/or clinical scientists, industry partners and non-governmental organizations to leverage NSF I-Corps efforts. Maintain and accurately document participant records and activities following program guidelines. Foster and maintain relationships with stakeholders and economic development organizations. Identify opportunities for growth and expansion of the program with specific emphasis on underrepresented innovators.
• Develop relationships with I-Corps teams and mentors. Organize entrepreneurship trainings, give presentations to faculty, students and partners in alignment with NSF I-Corps and the MMC Office of Research and Innovation goals and objectives. Recruit underrepresented participants for the NSF I-Corps Southwest Hub Regional and National programs. Serve as the lead instructor at MMC and national NSF I-Corps commercialization programs. Work with the curriculum committee of the NSF I-Corps Southwest Hub towards becoming an NSF certified I-Corps instructor.
• Work with MMC Office FOR Research and Innovation to identify and obtain additional funding to support innovation and entrepreneurship focused education, training and research. Assist teams with applications to national-level NSF I-Corps program; participate in I-Corps leadership meetings, and other institutional efforts. Draft, manage and update all marketing materials and social media outreach to highlight MMC NSF I-Corps accomplishments. Prepare reports highlighting the economic impact of NSF I-Corps programs and activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the VPRI or his designee.
Required Skills
• Experience with startup creation
• Experience in technology commercialization and/or entrepreneurship;
• Experience working with startup companies in the setting of university-affiliated technology parks is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated skill in effective oral and written communications and ability to work with students, faculty, staff and administrative personnel.
• Strong interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
• Ability to operate PC software and other office technology.
• Ability to quickly learn and work with others.
