Job Description:
The Bipolar Disorder Learning Health Network’s (BD LHN) mission is to ensure that every person living with bipolar disorder is part of a system that reduces morbidity and improves the health and well-being of people with bipolar disorder. The Network will bring together a large, engaged community of patients, clinicians, and researchers. This collaborative effort will merge insights and expertise with cutting-edge science, tools, and technology to enhance health and care. Additionally, the network will prioritize the production of new knowledge through research and its practical application. As a result, the BD LHN will produce better outcomes and experiences for patients and families, faster research, and lower costs.
The Project Director of the Bipolar Disorder Learning Health Network is a key member of the executive leadership team who will provide strategic leadership, and build will for transformative change to ensure that goals are defined, understood, and used to align and guide the network’s activities. The Project Director is responsible for the development of the strategic direction for the entire Network and reports to the Executive Leadership team.
The Project Director is responsible for:
• Developing and engaging in strategic partnerships and sponsor relationships across key organizations (e.g., with health systems, mental health service providers, patient advocacy groups, payers, and other sponsors), to align incentives (e.g., Maintenance of Certification, CME, financial) and advocate for needed policy change.
• Building a strong culture of collaborative innovation and co-production across the community of participants.
• Developing a business and sustainability model that can open revenue streams to sustain the network (e.g., grant development, engagement with federal and foundation research sponsors, and industry, payment models).
• Collaborating with the Network Chair to recruit and develop network leaders and faculty including clinical, patient and researcher experts who have achieved results, are motivated to tackle a challenging problem, and are willing to participate in the design and implementation of the network.
Opportunities and Challenges:
Develop a robust, sustainable organizational infrastructure and build relationships and funding streams required to achieve it. The Project Director will lead the development of a strategy and business plan to capitalize on the BD LHN’s capabilities to build for an innovative, sustainable future. The Project Director will engage payers and policy makers in setting a course for future policies needed to sustain the network.
Drive high quality, innovative clinical care, and continuous improvement. The Project Director will support the network’s vision and mission in leading the drive for the highest quality health outcomes for
patients living with BD through advances in clinical care, improvement, and research. The Project Director will work with Executive Leadership and Faculty, Quality Improvement team, Data and Analytics team, Patient and Family partners and Project Management team to develop the processes, infrastructure, and support to build the systems and processes to develop Network capabilities.
Recruit, retain and develop participants and care centers. The Project Director will partner closely with the Network Chair and with participating care center leaders to support their efforts to build the capacity and resources for improvement, engagement, and research. The Project Director will be responsible for recruiting and activating new sites for BD LHN and developing relationships with key stakeholders to ensure successful partnerships. The Project Director will develop and nurture emerging patient, family, health professional and research leaders, ensuring a strong and diverse pipeline of talent to confront the most profound questions and challenges in BD care.

Major Responsibilities:
Network and Executive Leadership
• Leading and developing the organizational mission, vision, and culture
• Developing and executing the Network’s annual strategic and operational plans together with the Executive Leadership team
• Defining and developing the Network’s governance structures and processes
• Developing and facilitating network governance to promote trustworthy oversight of network assets
• Developing and overseeing a robust program of communications to all network stakeholders via multiple channels (email, social media)
• Developing and advancing community building and engagement activities
• Developing key strategic relationships, working with the Network leadership team to develop and maintain relationships with institutional and other leaders at care centers, developing relationships with service providers, collaborating with other learning networks
• Seeking out partnerships and relationships that keep the Bipolar Learning Health Network on the leading edge of innovation
• Recruiting and developing network leaders, including health professionals, patients, families, and researchers
Business Development and Financial Sustainability
• Developing a strategic, diverse, and ambitious funding plan for ongoing operations, innovation, and research
• Leading business development activities, including attracting and securing financial support from foundation, payer, and industry (pharmaceutical, device, and technology companies) sponsors
• Identifying and securing grant funding and ongoing philanthropic contributions
• Maintaining financial oversight of the Bipolar Learning Health Network
Operational Leadership
Provide expert executive leadership to advance the operational infrastructure of the Bipolar Learning Health Network to support quality improvement practice and research in a Learning Health System. Ensure that participating care centers have the training, tools and support they need to be successful
• Provide oversight of all subcontracts
• Encouraging development and continuous improvement of network processes
• Developing processes across the network to support the curation of a repository of resources and tools for patients, clinicians, and researchers
• Participating in the development and planning of network learning activities, including Community Conferences and other learning eventsQualifications:
• Experience in new business development
• Leadership experience in a collaborative environment
• Strong track record of fundraising and partnership building
• Quality and/or safety leadership experience
• Experience and training in quality improvement and research methods
• Experience with nonprofit management

– Improvement Science: How to apply systems thinking, understanding variation and statistical process control methods to build knowledge, and the psychology of change.
– Informatics: How to use information systems to conduct LHS research and improve patient and health system outcomes.
– Engagement: How to engage all stakeholders in all aspects of improvement and research process.
– System Science: Understanding how health systems operate and are financed and how to apply systems theory to research and implementation.
– Research Questions and Standards of Evidence: How to ask meaningful questions relevant to health system stakeholders and evaluate the usefulness of scientific evidence and insights.
– Research Methods: How to conduct research within the context of real-world health systems using appropriate study designs and analytic methods to assess outcomes of interest to health systems stakeholders.
– Ethics of Research and Implementation: How to ensure that research and quality improvement performed in health care settings adhere to the highest ethical and regulatory standards.
