Print worklists, and aide in prioritizing daily workflow as directed. Ensures all blocks and slides are clerically correct. Distribute blocks to histologists per assignment. Distribute slides to residents and staff pathologists. Files tissue blocks, ensuring each is properly labeled. Be able to coordinate send out testing in SPU and IHC Lab.
Shares responsibility for preparation of solutions and reagents in accordance with approved procedures. Be able to set-up the frozen lab for clinical testing. Be able to open, label and stock reagents. Inform Senior technicians and Supervisor of any low stocking and expiring reagents. Be able to record reagent lot numbers in the online document system. Be able to set up the H&E stainers for Histology, and Special stainers for SPU and IHC following Standard Operational Procedures.
Assist in the IHC lab with unloading and running down, and coverslipping slides for IHC technicians.
Learn to use LIS system to perform daily lab operations. Review and distribution of the daily IHC-SPU error logs. Inform senior technicians and supervisor of any delays on testing.
Be flexible with schedule and after hours, including weekends. Covering areas in the labs as needed.
Be proactive in learning next steps for laboratory workflow.
Daily laboratory maintenance duties of all the laboratory equipment as assigned by the laboratory supervisor and policies. Includes tissue processors, fixation stations, embedding centers and all histological equipment including stainers. Disposes of chemical waste in accordance with departmental and hospital regulations.Minimum of a high school degree. Basic understanding of the functions of a histology laboratory and its relationship to patient care. Familiarity of medical terminology and above average math skills preferred. One year of related clinical laboratory experience desired, but not necessary. A strong interest in science and technology are highly desirable. Proven track record with previous employment. Not required, but HT(ASCP) eligibility preferred.
Must have the ability to follow established technical, safety and clerical procedures.
Must have manual dexterity and motor coordination.
Be attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks.
Must be able to lift 50lbs.
Must have good customer service skills.
Perform basic computer skills such as excel, word and outlook.
