GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.
The Night Shift Lab Supervisor reports directly to the Technical Director. His/her responsibilities encompass night operations of the Core Lab including Automated and Special Chemistry, Toxicology, Blood Gas/Kiosk, Central Processing, Hematology, Special Hematology, Coagulation and Urinalysis ; coordinates work to provide timely completion of all tests; responsible for weekly payroll and scheduling of lab personnel (including time off); monitors test procedures as necessary to ensure adherence to lab quality control criteria and hospital policies and procedures; answers questions, confers with hospital staff; ensures that the lab spaces are consistently maintained in a hygienically safe and functional condition; oversees training of personnel in coordination with the Senior Technologist on the shifts and area specific supervisors; assists in maintaining the methods books, quality control logs, machine maintenance logs, quality assurance logs, maintains competencies for employees in conjunction with the area specific supervisors; oversees QC and QA on the night shift; night shift lab liaison to Sunquest Support Team.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
Provides smooth operation of Core Laboratory night shift; maintains adequate coverage; and insures that all personnel are adequately trained and that they maintain their competency.
Oversees all quality control procedures, oversees night shift maintenance on instruments and may troubleshoot instrument malfunctions. Ensures full documentation according to lab policies.
Maintains close liaison and cooperation with other lab sections and hospital staff to provide coordination of activities which affect patient care. Functions as resource person for medical and nursing staff in regard to diagnostic testing in the Core Lab.
Operates computer terminal to enter and retrieve pertinent laboratory reports and information. Primary lab resource for Laboratory Information System (LIS) issues on the night shift. Performs minor maintenance on computer terminals, as necessary; troubleshoots minor software and hardware malfunctions; notifies IS Help Desk of major malfunctions or problems.
Follows all safety policies and procedures (including infection control and hazardous material). Notifies Technical Director of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities. Orients new staff to the department and the shift.
Implements new policies and procedures, as needed.
Attends departmental meetings and serves on committees as directed by the Technical Director. Attends educational seminars and conferences to remain current with technological advancements and trends.
Performs/documents employee corrective action with consultation from Technical Director, Lab Director and/or Human Resources, as requested or applicable. Assists in analysis for new FTE requests as requested or applicable.
Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions.
Oversees/prepares staffing schedules. Payroll report submission and/or approval. Use of Kronos and Peoplesoft for HR management of new hires and transfer of staff, as required.
Provides appropriate training, equipment, and education to protect staff and visitors from unsafe conditions. Coordinates/conducts training lab staff on new methods/procedures.
Coordinates monitoring of lab performance/regulatory compliance. Reports regulatory deficiencies to the Technical Director and Lab Director as appropriate. Coordinates the preparation of lab staff for unannounced Joint Commission and other regulatory agency surveys, as requested or applicable. Investigates and follows up for Safety Reports as requested.
Prepares and conducts performance evaluations of lab staff, use of Peoplesoft to complete HR process as requested or applicable. Conducts interviews and recommends candidates for hiring, working with the Pathology HR generalist and recruiter. Works with Technical Director and/or Lab Director as applicable, to obtain final approval on candidate selection.
Resource/consultant for unusual/abnormal patient findings, and instrument technical problems.
Performs Bench testing and assists in Central Processing in emergency situations(as necessary). Maintains competency on at least one bench in Chemistry and one bench in Hematology. Maintains competency on the 8100 Pre-Analytic robot.
Performs testing, quality controls, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting as required.
Conducts special projects under the direction of the Technical Director.
Ensures all employees follow all safety (including standard precautions and hazardous material) policies and procedures, responds to and resolves all unsafe conditions, and notifies the Technical Director of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities.
Provides supervisory support on holidays and weekends in conjunction with Senior Techs based on a rotating schedule.
Qualifications:
ASCP Certification
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biological Science
Minimum 6 years of progressively more responsible experience with a minimum 1 year in a supervisory role. Demonstrated knowledge specific to the specialty OR Minimum 3 years as SMT or TS in a relevant specialty at MGH and Total of 2 consecutive years performance that meet expectations
Meets continuing education requirements according to lab specific requirements.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (authority to hire, promote, or terminate): Indicate supervisory “scope” and list the number of employees supervised.
