Hospital for Special Surgery Looking for Manager, Patient Accounts – International at New York City, NY Full Time

Overview:

The Manager, Patient Accounts – International manages all financial activities of the international Center including the process of financial clearance. She/He will also be responsible for the oversight of the Embassy Billing and/or any other areas assigned as well as fiscal management of all aspects of billing for international patients with embassy, self-pay, or international insurance.  She/He will work closely with various departments and physician office staff at HSS to ensure optimal coordination of billing and accounts receivable. She/He will also ensure process optimization from all levels within the department to increase efficiency and accuracy. She/He will work in close collaboration with other Patient Accounts staff and members of the Revenue Cycle Team. In addition, she/he will build relationships internally and externally with physicians, hospitals, and other constituencies, such as embassies, consulates, other governmental entities and multinational corporations as required. The manager will work with the Sr. Director to establish mechanisms to continually evaluate and respond to short-and long-term operational needs and ensure the availability of adequate resources to accomplish goals.

Responsibilities:

• Manages the day-to-day financial operations of the department including but not limited to trouble-shooting issues and appropriately escalating to resolve them quickly.
• Manages billing processes for hospital and physician billing (both internal physicians at HSS and external voluntary physicians); requires working with multiple EHR and billing systems.
• Oversee the billing and collection functions and staff related to international patients, ensuring accurate charge estimates, patient registration, payment collection and allocation, production of patient bills and statements, and prompt response to patient queries regarding financial information.
• Ensure embassy billing processes are current. This may include visiting embassies in Washington DC.
• Ensures that when Embassy payments are received, all accounts are reconciled and paid out timely.
• Establish annual performance goals and assess staff performance. Develop, oversee, evaluate, and conduct in-service training programs.
• In conjunction with the Sr. Director, enhances and standardizes work-flow processes throughout the IC revenue cycle to assist in achieving consistency in maintaining cash flow.
• Participates in hiring, training, evaluation, and termination of assigned staff according to hospital policies and procedures.
• Maintain professional growth and development by actively participating in seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to stay abreast of the latest trends in the field.
• Enhance quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance within the department.
• Maintain a close and harmonious relationship with embassies, international partners, and peer organizations as necessary and in the best interest of the institution.
• Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• The qualified candidate will have supervisory level or prior experience with a record of strong skills that exemplify leadership.
• The qualified candidate will also have prior experience streamlining processes in one or more departments and a track record for encouraging team members to identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency and revenue.
• S/He will show attention to detail and approach difficult situations with a can-do attitude. 
• S/He will bring creativity, developing new approaches to old problems.
• The qualified candidate will have demonstrated exceptional written skills and polished verbal and presentation skills.

Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree required in healthcare, or a related field, or four (4) years of relevant experience.

Additional Requirements

• Requires a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
• Prior experience in departmental management or managing a physician practice.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population, strong customer service skills, demonstrating tact and sensitivity in stressful situations.
• Fluency in English (verbal and written). Fluency in at least one of the following languages preferred (verbal and written): Arabic, or Spanish preferred.
• Demonstrated computer skills with data entry software, preferred Epic and/or hospital billing software.

Experience:

• 2 years experience
• Experience managing or working in an international department at a hospital preferred.
• At least 2 years of strong Epic and/or Salesforce experience in a healthcare setting.
