Hastings Mutual is currently looking for a Nurse Case Manager! This is a great opportunity for an experienced Nursing professional to join our PIP / Worker’s Compensation team and deliver exceptional medical evaluation and support for our policyholders. 

Position Overview

The individual in this role will assist in the evaluation of the physiological and psychological needs of seriously injured parties and acts as a liaison between doctor, patient, and other medical or rehabilitation service providers to ensure the best practical and cost-effective medical or rehabilitation result in accord with our contractual and legal obligations.

Typically, they will be assigned approximately five new cases per month and maintains an open caseload of 35-50 claims at any given time. Work will primarily include virtual/telephonic contact with injured parties, employers, physicians, therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, medical case managers, and rehabilitation and vocational counselors. 

Position Location & Work Format

The Nurse Case Manager role is a remote-based position. Generally, this position will work within our standard office hours of Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. However, due to the nature of the business, work outside of these hours may take place. 

Qualified candidates must reside in Southeastern Lower Michigan. (i.e., Oakland, Livingston, Macomb, Wayne, Washtenaw , Genesee or surrounding counties). 

Position Duties & Responsibilities

• Works with seriously injured parties and their families to assist in evaluating their physiological and psychological needs resulting from an accident.
• Acts as a liaison and coordinator between doctor, patient, employer, and other medical or rehabilitation service providers to ensure the best cost-effective result.
• Promptly report to the claim handler the anticipated length and type of disability, as well as medical and rehabilitation, needs to facilitate handling involving moderate to high severity claims.
• Provides direction to claim representatives and other hired outside medical and vocational case managers to ensure the best practical and cost-effective result.
• Assists in evaluating long-term reserving by developing medical cost projections and file reviews.
• Negotiates charges for durable medical equipment, home care, and other medical services to ensure quality, cost-effective service in compliance with physician’s orders.
• Acts as an expert resource to all claim department staff regarding litigated and non-litigated medical and disability issues.
• Provides seminars and ongoing education to claim staff regarding medical issues, new treatments available, medical providers, and disability issues to increase knowledge and expertise within the department.
• Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
• Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

• An Associate’s degree in Nursing or higher is required.
• Three years minimum of practical nursing experience in acute hospital nursing, including intensive care and/or catastrophic case management.
• Licensed by the state in which they reside as a registered nurse with certification as Certified Disability Management Specialist, Certified Case Manager, or another similar accreditation.
  • Aside from home state, licensure in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and or Wisconsin is also desired. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated PC skills, including basic use of Microsoft Office products.
• Good time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and complete work and/or projects effectively with minimal supervision.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a company vehicle within HMIC’s Fleet Usage Safety Guidelines.
