Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Looking for Assistant Director, Center for Global Health at Boston, MA  Full Time

The Center for Global Health (CGH) Assistant Director (AD) supports the activities of the CGH leadership and steering committee to provide administrative support for the CGH. The Assistant Director is responsible for developing strategy, providing management and oversight of operations of the CGH. The AD develops and provides a solid infrastructure of core functions and services needed to support various stakeholders doing work in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The AD develops and maintains systems with various administrative departments within DFCI, including, but not limited to, the Office General Counsel, Office for Human Protection of Research Subjects, Philanthropy, Finance, Grants Administration, and others, to streamline processes needed for the conduct of clinical capacity building, research, and education in LMICs. The AD develops collaborative relationships with academic departments, centers, and researchers at DFCI, Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) including departments of Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgery, Nursing, Pathology, Imaging, Population Science, and collaborators outside of DFCI. The AD represents DFCI in meetings with external entities as well as with peer institutions (BWH/BCH).

Strategic Responsibilities

• Conducts ongoing stakeholder interviews to understand the current state and priority areas for faculty/staff engaged in global activities.
• Provides strategic input to steering committee on the development of the CGH, including growth possibilities over time.
• Develops and implements workplans based on strategic priorities and stakeholder interviews addressing most pressing issues common among stakeholders.
• Develops strategic plan every 3-4 years with input from and in support of Steering Committee.
• Works to raise the profile of DFCI faculty and staff engaged in LMIC global efforts both within and outside of DFCI.
• Measures and monitors the impact of global oncology activities.
• Identifies areas of redundancy and inefficiencies within DFCI global groups and works with stakeholders to streamline processes to increase efficiency.
• Develops assessment of and criteria for potential DFCI global partnerships.
• Develops linkages with DFCI Philanthropy to establish ongoing fundraising opportunities.

Program and Operational Responsibilities

• Serves as primary contact for the CGH and primary administrative liaison to clinical and administrative leaders from partner organizations.
• Liaises with groups globally on behalf of DFCI, makes introductions and connections to create opportunities for DFCI faculty/staff for collaboration.
• Receives and triages routine requests from individuals or groups related to DFCI global oncology efforts and/or seeking collaborations and advice from the CGH.
• Develops standard operating procedures for CGH and DFCI global groups as appropriate.
• Determines staffing plan for CGH with Steering Committee.
• Oversees day-to-day operations of the CGH.
• Provides project management for CGH projects.
• Plans and facilitates large meetings and workgroups with faculty and management across multiple departments.
• Develops meeting materials (e.g., agendas, presentations, etc.) and other written materials (e.g., business plans, etc.) for senior leadership.
• Organizes, attends and staffs steering committee meetings and relevant global faculty and staff meetings.
• Embeds quality-improvement principles into CGH activities.
• In collaboration with DFCI Communications Department, develops and implements a communications strategy for CGH including print material, website, and social media.
• Educates DFCI global groups of the required legal and regulatory agreements needed for various work in LMICs.
• Prepares reports, including an annual report, of CGH activities.
• In collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, develops templated legal agreements for use by DFCI global groups to assure legal, regulatory, and institutional standards are met.
• Develops inventory of grant opportunities specific to global work in LMICs to share with CGH members.

Research Responsibilities

• Serves as primary contact for students interested in participating in global research projects and connect students to appropriate CGH member.
• Ensures research conducted in LMIC is compliant with DFCI, national, and global regulatory bodies and global research practices.
• Develops and implements processes within CGH to assist investigators in approval and conduct of research.
• Supports researchers in administrative processes associated with the conduct of their research projects.

Education Responsibilities

• Serves as a central point person for individuals, academic programs, or academic/medical centers who are interested in working with DFCI CGH faculty and staff.
• Develops and oversees logistics of an observership program of individuals from LMICs at DFCI, including measuring outcomes and participant evaluation to continuously improve the program.
• Provides management and oversight for developing global seminar series, workshops, and guest lectures.
• Participates in national and international conferences related to CGH work.

Fiscal Responsibilities

• Manages CGH budget and other funds.
• Manages and works with relevant DFCI groups to process global financial transactions within DFCI systems and standards.
• Develops financial reports as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Self-motivated and organized
• Experience managing a budget
• Experience working with international, multicultural teams and diverse partners
• Excellent time management skills required to prioritize and juggle multiple tasks; deals well with uncertainty and ambiguity; flexible with changes in prioritization in a consensus decision-making environment
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; must possess the ability to converse effectively andprepare written proposals, analyses and other documents in a manner readily understood by and crafted for the target audience
• Strong client orientation and interpersonal skills and ability to work with staff at all levels of the organization, taking into consideration cultural differences
• Ability to conduct work with attention to detail to ensure high quality deliverables, but always in the context of being able to see the big picture
• Ability to effectively troubleshoot and resolve issues while taking the appropriate steps, involving the appropriate parties, when necessary
• Ability to work closely and effectively as a member of a team and with all levels of the organization.
• Ability to speak multiple languages is a plus
• Proficiency with software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, budget systems, etc.

• Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related research discipline; or an advanced degree in a relevant clinical field such as nursing, medicine, or pharmacy
• Prior experience in a relevant aspect of global health required
• Experience leading institutional initiatives and multidisciplinary teams required
• Ability and willingness to travel internationally
• 3 years’ experience working with international stakeholders

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD in public health, epidemiology, or a related research discipline
• Experience working in a highly matrixed organization
• Prior experience in oncology
• 5 years’ experience working with international stakeholders
