Assistant Professor of Art Education

Central Connecticut State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position with a focus on teacher education to begin in August of 2023 in the Department of Art & Design.
· The candidate will be integral to maintaining, developing, and innovating a contemporary and inclusive approach to the Art Education program and curriculum. This includes keeping abreast of contemporary art education theories and practices and preparing students for the professional requirements in Connecticut teaching certification.
· The candidate will be critical in continuing and maintaining coordination between the Art & Design Department, the School of Education and Professional Studies and the Connecticut State Board of Teacher Certification to ensure effective compliance and completion of all university and Connecticut state regulations for CCSU students to achieve state teacher certification. The person will work with SEPS and multiple public education districts to help coordinate teaching field experiences and student-teaching placements.
· The candidate will provide advising and support to Art Education, BSEd, Post- Baccalaureate and Graduate student candidates from application through degree completion, filling the role of Graduate Program Coordinator.
· The candidate will be active in collaborating with other colleagues, part-time and full-time, who teach foundation, studio, and design courses. This person will also work with the Saturday Arts Workshop teaching program which engages the New Britain community in developing and teaching courses offered to New Britain public and private school students in K-12 grades and promotes visibility for the Art & Design Department as well as the university in general. This program introduces young, potential students to the resources and benefits provided by CCSU and the Art and Design Department in addition to providing our Art Education undergraduate and post-baccalaureate with the opportunity of instructing and educating students in real time.

· Ph. D or Ed. D in Art Education or MFA in related field
· College/University teaching experience. -1 year or equivalent experience as TA or adjunct
· Minimum 3 years-experience as a PreK-12 public school teacher
· Research contributions (including but not limited to scholarly publications) that respond to contemporary perspectives in art education.
· Working knowledge of state and national visual arts standards, lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management
· Record of contribution to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, scholarship and service
Preferred Qualifications
· Teaching experience at elementary level (PreK- 6)
· 5 years public school teaching experience
· Strong national/international exhibition record of art-making
· A research agenda that demonstrates a sustainable trajectory for career advancement
· Research contributions that are national/international in scope
· Familiarity with state standards governing teacher education and licensure including EdTPA
· Experience with University assessment and program accreditation
· Curatorial experience in a gallery, museum or publishing environment
· Evidence of commitment to community outreach.

The Community: Located nine miles southwest of Hartford, New Britain is a city of approximately 72,000. Part of the Greater Hartford area of 1.2 million residents, New Britain is centrally located in the state and is within easy reach of much of Connecticut and several metropolitan areas. Nicknamed “the Hardware City” for its rich industrial heritage, it is home to Stanley Black & Decker. Important cultural institutions include the New Britain Museum of American Art and Walnut Hill Park, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead. New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 70% of the population as White, 13% as Black or African American, 3% as Asian, and 0.2% as American Indian or Alaska Native. Currently 4.6% of New Britain’s population identify themselves in more than one
racial category and 43% of New Britain’s population identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Fifty percent (50%) speak a language other than English in the home and 19% were born internationally. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rico and Poland or consider themselves to be from the African-American, Italian, or Irish ethnic backgrounds. In addition to all that greater Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Massachusetts, two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.

In accordance with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collective Bargaining Union Contract, compensation for this position is at the rank of Assistant Professor for 2023-2024.
