Nurse Extern Telemetry Position Summary
The Nurse Extern position provides a bridge between graduation from an accredited nursing program and licensure. The purpose of the nurse externship is to enhance education and to facilitate the transition into the RN role while assuring safe and effective nursing care. Under the direct supervision of a licensed RN, the nurse extern can administer, titrate, and discontinue oxygen therapy, obtain basic data collection and documentation of client progress in the medical record, observe, perform and document approved nursing procedures in the medical record and perform fundamental nursing skills with validation and documentation in accordance with facility policy. The nurse extern may not administer medications (PO, IV, SQ, etc.), parenteral fluids or blood products. The nurse extern may use saline to flush a peripheral IV, once competency is established.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitude of a safe competent novice nurse practitioner. This includes the ability to provide patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence based practice, quality improvements, systems-based thinking, leadership, professionalism, and effective communication.
THE NURSE EXTERN TELEMETRY CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Completion of at least the 1st clinical semester rotation.
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Completion of the 2nd of 4 clinical semester rotations.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: BLS/CPR
REQUIRED COURSE(S) OF TRAINING: Graduate from an accredited nursing program and eligible to take the NCLEX within 6 months of hire.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATION: ACLS
