Under the general supervision of the 3D Laboratory Operations Manager, the 3D Imaging Technologist operates 3D imaging workstations and other computers. Manages image data transfer to and from the 3D Lab workstations in an accurate and timely manner. Manipulates digital medical images in multiple planes and dimensions for clinical visualization and analysis of diagnostic and interventional studies. Uses the radiology information system to update scheduling and billing records.
A 3D Imaging Technologist must be experienced in cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) and must understand cross-sectional anatomy to be able to recognize scan artifacts and abnormal anatomy/pathology to identify in 3D images. Experienced CT technologists hired as 3D Imaging Technologists will undergo a rigorous training program in the MGH 3D Imaging Service for approximately 9-months to learn the advanced imaging techniques required to consistently create high-quality, clinically valuable 3D images from CT or MRI scans. The 3D Imaging Technologist will be trained and will learn the skills required to understand 3D anatomy, and operations of advanced 3D imaging workstations. Thus, the 3D Imaging Technologist position requires all the knowledge and skills of a trained, experienced CT technologist, plus the additional training and skills developed in the MGH 3D Imaging Service for creating additional clinical 3D imaging views.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Confirm 3D orders and consults with the ordering provider or radiologist, if necessary.
Prepare diagnostic images for visualization and quantification. Assist with quantitative measurements when indicated. Ensure that images requiring post-processing or manipulation are networked to appropriate workstations and processed photographs are networked to PACS and other viewing or archival systems.
Operate computer software for producing 3D images and reconstructions for optimal visualization of patient’s anatomic structures per 3D Lab protocol. Identify and demonstrate pathology and normal anatomical variants. Work in conjunction with radiologists and other clinicians to ensure that the post-processed images are of maximal clinical value.
Collaborate with radiologic technologists in CT and MRI, ensuring that acquisition scanning protocols are up-to-date and appropriate for 3D.
Use the radiology information system to update scheduling and billing records, indicating that a 3D procedure was performed and linked to the correct exam.
Inform appropriate personnel when equipment problems exist, and call service engineers when a repair is indicated.
Assist in instructing physicians and technologists who are learning 3D lab applications.
Aid in the design of new protocols for data acquisition when appropriate.
Transfer 3D lab images onto hard copy at physicians’ request.
Select, extract, reformat, and de-identify images.
Demonstrate professionalism towards fellow employees at all times.
