The School of Education (SOE) at American University (AU) invites applications for a term (non-tenure track) full-time position of Lead Instructor/Professorial Lecturer (Lead Clinical Faculty) with a focus on Secondary Literacy Education, supporting our partnership with the City Teaching Alliance program, faculty appointment for the academic year 2023-2024, with potential for subsequent annual reappointment. The position will be based in Dallas, Texas. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field.
Through this partnership with City Teaching Alliance, the AU SOE offers a two-year Master of Arts in Teaching degree that is integrated into a four-year teacher preparation program that results in the degree as well as eligibility for dual certification in a content area and special education. The mission of City Teaching Alliance is to prepare highly effective teachers who significantly accelerate student achievement in the nation’s highest-need schools by recruiting outstanding candidates, equipping them with state-of-the-art and research-based pedagogy and professional development, and linking their certification to their demonstration of effective teaching practices and skills.
We seek qualified candidates who are deeply committed to antiracism in urban education and with expertise in English Language Arts to work in the role of Lead Clinical Faculty for our Dallas site.
Lead Clinical Faculty serve two main roles.
First, they support an evidence-based field experience model of teacher preparation through coaching, providing feedback, and evaluating Clinical Faculty. Lead Clinical Faculty will:
1. Supervise, coach, and evaluate discipline-specific clinical instructional faculty via observation and feedback on teaching and instructional coaching.
a. Meet with Clinical Faculty regularly to discuss participant issues and content (either teaching content or coaching content).
b. Maintain observation and mentoring logs for each Clinical Faculty member. Meet with the Director of Clinical Faculty weekly to review this data and monitor the progress of Clinical Faculty members individually and collectively.
c. Complete the final evaluation of each faculty member at the end of the semester or school year and collaborate with the Director of Clinical Faculty around contract renewal.
2. Develop and enact professional development in consultation with the Director of Clinical Faculty.
3. Act as site lead for content area, including providing ongoing feedback on the quality of curriculum and programmatic support. Participate in course revisions in collaboration with other faculty and the CTA Literacy Education Content Director.
Second, they are a core part of the site team and serve as the liaison between their content-area faculty, the Director of Clinical Faculty, and the Site Director. Lead Clinical Faculty will:
1. Coach program participants using observation guidelines and frequency established by the CTA national office.
2. Lead coursework by modeling best instructional practices, providing ongoing written and verbal feedback, supporting and grading assignments, and incorporating technology.
3. Support faculty with specific aspects of their job (e.g., guidance on pedagogy, coaching on teaching and coaching systems).
4. Coordinate planning of summer and school year programming with the Director of Clinical Faculty and the City Teaching Alliance Executive Director, Assistant Director, and national office.
5. Coordinate staffing of the school year with the Director of Clinical Faculty and assist with building the coursework schedule.
6. Meet regularly with faculty to discuss the performance of program participants and share strengths and concerns with the Director of Clinical Faculty and City Teaching Alliance site leadership.
7. Participate in meetings and professional development with CTA site and national teams.
8. Perform duties as needed (e.g., data analysis, materials management, maintaining digital content, teaching, coaching).
9. Collaborate with the UT national Curriculum and Professional Development team

The appointment is a 12-month faculty position and will commence in November 2023, providing services in Dallas, Texas. Applicants should hold a master’s degree or higher in education or other closely related fields (e.g., child development). This person has a demonstrated record of continuous, and courageous, commitment to anti-racism in urban education. Applicants should be currently employed by American University in the City Teaching Alliance Program and hold a graduate degree (M.A. or higher) related to education; experience in PK-12 urban public education as a teacher; at least three years of experience as a staff developer and/or administrator; extensive knowledge of the content and pedagogical content knowledge in the relevant discipline; experience in group facilitation and mentoring; experience with internship programs; ability to work as a member of a high-functioning team.
