Subsurface Geologic Information Specialist
Starting salary range: $42,000-$45,000

The Minnesota Geological Survey creates comprehensive geologic maps and associated databases to support management of water and mineral resources across the state. This position focuses on compiling and processing information about subsurface conditions, including adding essential location and geologic interpretation information, to make data suitable for inclusion in the County Well Index database (CWI) or other databases. The County Well Index is the statewide database for wells and borings and is co-managed by the Minnesota Geological Survey and the Minnesota Department of Health. Work for this entry-level position will involve processing and collection of geologic information in both field and office settings, and will be performed both independently and under direct supervision of a geologist and senior staff. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to bring their unique experience and perspective to our research community.
Please note, on-the-job training will be provided for duties listed below. The MGS works with the University of Minnesota’s Disability Resource Center to improve access for all employees. The duties of the subsurface geologic information specialist may include but are not limited to the following.
Essential Functions:
Serve as a data steward by compiling, maintaining, and adding value to subsurface databases:
Work with others to add value to the data:
Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS):
Act as a liaison with the public regarding database questions:
Collect data in the field (~15% of time):

Work Environment
Most of the work for this position is performed in an office setting which is located off-campus near University Ave and HWY 280 in St. Paul. Up to 15% of work will be performed in the field. Fieldwork can take place anywhere there is a water well, monitoring well, or exploratory borehole, which can be anywhere in the state of Minnesota. Some field work may take place on active drilling sites. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position as long as the changes and/or additions are consistent with the job classification
The Minnesota Geological Survey is a research and service arm of the Newton Horace Winchell School of Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota. It investigates the geology of Minnesota and provides basic public information on the geology of the state. The Survey works with state, county, and regional offices to set up geologic data bases and provide technical guidance for water resource planning, land management and mineral exploration policy, energy system development, and other planning and resource management activities.
