GCI’s Remote Camp Laborer performs retreat operations functions including grounds keeping, waste disposal, building maintenance and general cleaning duties. Also responsible for light equipment maintenance, fuel tank monitoring and some fuel transfer duties. Assist in loading and unloading supplies and guest baggage from airplanes and boats. Interacts with guests and assists them in taking advantage of Retreat activities.
Essential Duties:
• 20% Leads Retreat grounds keeping effort, prepares ground, plants, irrigates and mows grass. Trims foliage, cuts and pulls weeds as necessary. Maintains footpaths and trails throughout Retreat property and operates Retreat equipment for the purpose of maintaining Retreat grounds.
• 20% Performs routine facility maintenance tasks including painting and staining buildings, washing windows, cleaning work areas, stocking firewood and cleaning fireplaces and wood stoves.
• 20% Performs waste collection, disposal, incineration and transfer duties. Maintains and cleans kitchen grease trap.
• 10% Handles freight and guest baggage that arrives and departs by aircraft or boat
• 10% Assists guests in their enjoyment of Retreat activities and facilities and assists with maintenance of guest recreational equipment.
• 10% Assists Retreat Maintenance Manager with special projects
• 10% Monitors fuel tank levels and assist with transfer of fuel and propane. Monitors power system battery fluid levels.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Have a thorough understanding of how the Retreat operates and what tasks must be performed, in a prioritized manner, to accomplish operational objectives assuring high quality service
• Experienced light equipment operator who is capable operating skid-steer, ATVs, trailers, power-washer and riding garden tractor.
• Basic knowledge of lawn care including ground preparation, planting, seeding, fertilizing, weeding and mowing
• Ability to operate outboard-equipped boats on local waters
• Intermediate knowledge of Kayaking in rivers, archery and skeet shooting
• Knowledgeable and ability to implement company safety procedures and Retreat safety policies
• Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently and to communicate effectively with other staff and Retreat guests
Years of Experience required to meet minimum qualifications: A minimum of two years’ experience in a similar work environment with a similar range of duties and responsibilities.
Level of Education required to meet minimum qualifications: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.

Completion of company provided First Aid/CPR/AED training

Physical Requirements:Must be capable of performing a variety of physical functions involving lifting and carrying loads up to 70 lbs. following company guidelines, efficiently and safely entering and exiting aircraft, boats and other motorized equipment, operation of 6-wheeler, 4-wheeler and Bobcat, climbing ladders to heights of 20 feet, and operating an outboard motor boat. Must be physically able to perform routine grounds keeping functions that require, lawn mowing, digging/shoveling, raking, and carrying, lifting, climbing and similar activities.
Working Conditions: Must live and work at a remote Retreat location (with employer provided room and board) for a period of approximately 5 months. Work schedule is 7 days per week. Most duties are performed outside with exposure to weather, fuels, solvents and chemicals.
The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. As such, you will be requested to provide emergency after hours contact numbers, to include your home and cell phone numbers if you have those services.
Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
