DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the SRA 1 will perform experiments to understand the mechanism(s) of RNA turnover in human cells in collaboration with other lab employees. Utilize standard molecular biology techniques and a variety of specialized experimental procedure techniques including RNA turnover assays, gene knockdowns using siRNAs, PCR, DNA purification, tissue cultures, transient transfections, stable transfections, CRISPR-mediated genome modifications, protein analyses. Assist in generating manuscripts that will be submitted for publication.
Additional responsibilities include lab management which encompasses lab inventory including ordering of supplies and equipment; handling shipments of reagents, overseeing lab safety training (EH&S), hiring, training and providing work direction for all undergraduate employees, general routine support (preparation of common buffers, DNA purification, preparation of specialized reagents) and proper disposal and storage of hazardous waste.
QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology as acquired through the completion of a BA/BS in one of these disciplines or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
Experience with molecular biology techniques as acquired through a lab course and/or research experience including DNA cloning, RNA analyses, protein analyses, etc.
Experience with and/or understanding of basic laboratory equipment: centrifuges, balances, power supplies, electrophoresis apparatus, pH meter, microscopes, spectrophotometer, as acquired through a lab course and or research experience.
Ability to organize and carry out efficiently multiple and varied tasks during each workday.
Ability to maintain clear, concise lab notes and records.
Experience and skill with word processing, filemaking, spreadsheet, and graphics software (PC and MAC preferred).
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with all lab members to facilitate communications including the ability to discuss and understand day to day laboratory affairs, research, plans, results and ideas with the PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
Ability to learn new experimental methods, and work independently or collaboratively with other lab members, with accuracy and attention to detail.
Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
High level mathematical computation skills required to maintain accurate data and to prepare reagent solutions.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Occasional evening or weekend work as required by particular experiments.
Willingness to work with radioisotopes.
Ability and willingness to work with human cell lines that could harbor pathogens.
Ability and willingness to work with hazardous chemicals.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 – $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 – $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
