The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility is one of the 10 service centers within the Center for Biomedical Research Support (CBRS) that operates under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors to support the research community on campus and externally. The facility provides services, self-service equipment, and collaborative research for the detection, characterization, and quantification of proteins and other biomolecules.
The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility is seeking a Research Engineering/Scientist Associate III to provide proteomics and metabolomics services using HPLC and mass spectrometry in the Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility, to educate and train users, collaborate with faculty, and develop new assays for the facility.

Purpose
To provide services and engage in collaborative biological mass spectrometry experiments with users, maintain equipment, test and implement new services, present and publish research findings, assist in funding acquisition, develop educational offerings, and contribute to lab duties.
Responsibilities
Provide services and collaborative research in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, including proteomics and metabolomics. Consult with users on experimental design and follow up after experiments are completed. Conduct associated protein/peptide enrichment, digestion and labeling protocols. Use purchased and freeware software to process proteomics and metabolomics data for identification and quantitation. Prepare results and deliver to users electronically within the expected turnaround time. Train users in self-service operation of lab equipment and MALDI mass spectrometer. Operate and do routine maintenance on the lab HPLCs and mass spectrometers.
Follow developments in the field of proteomics and metabolomics to communicate with users and propose new assays and technologies. Develop, test and implement new service protocols and software for data analysis. Manage data backups. Participate in grant writing and contribute to publications.
Organize, develop and present educational lectures and workshops. Engage in outreach activities.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in proteomics, biochemistry, or a relevant field and 2 years’ experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry of proteins, or bachelor’s degree and 4 years’ experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry of proteins.
Experience in nanoflow HPLC and Orbitrap mass spectrometry instrumentation daily operation and troubleshooting.
Experience with SDS-PAGE gels, proteolytic digestion and protein identification and quantitation with labeled and label free approaches.
Experience with proteomics software for identification and quantitation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working in a team environment and collaborating with on- and off-site research labs.
Ability to multi-task.
Ability to work independently and perform service work with expected turnaround and quality control.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in chemistry, biology, or a relevant degree with experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry of biomolecules.
Bioinformatics experience.
Experience repairing HPLC and mass spectrometry equipment.
Experience with protein sample preparation protocols including lysis and enrichment.
Experience using Evosep.
Experience in metabolomics.
Core facility experience.
Experience with Spectronaut, Chymeris, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, Scaffold, and MS-Fragger.
MALDI-TOF experience.
Salary
$60,000 + depending on qualifications
