The UNM Applications Division of Information Technologies is seeking candidates for a Senior Business Analyst. The successful candidate will join a high-caliber team of professionals in developing and supporting the next generation of enterprise applications used by the entire UNM community and supporting critical enterprise operations across campus.
Broadly, this position will lead the Project Intake and Initial Analysis processes for our enterprise application portfolio, working with customers and IT staff and management to ensure incoming requests are processed in a timely manner, conduct initial analyses of the requests, gather requirements, identify solutions and select the best one, prepare and deliver presentations to governance and leadership teams, and train and coach technical staff in requirements elicitation and management to ensure a smooth hand-off to the development team. This person will be setting BA standards and practices and providing coaching across the division and as such should have a depth of experience and breadth of perspective that allows them to balance theory and practice and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of these practices in a sustainable manner.
More specifically, the role will include the following responsibilities:
* Lead Standards – Lead and establish Business Analysis standards and documentation for IT Applications.
* Continuous Process Improvement – Work with IT Applications Leadership to develop Key Performance Measures and analysis for continuous improvement of Business Analysis processes and other IT Application’s processes and practices.
* Evolve your position – Raise the business analysis, knowledge elicitation, and requirements management skill levels of our development staff to the point where they can do the work themselves and don’t need a dedicated BA on every project. This will free you to work on the most complex efforts, perform continuous improvement on our processes, look ahead and prepare the division for new tools / technologies / approaches, and take us to the next level.
* Project Intake and Initial Analysis – Lead the Project Intake and Initial Analysis processes for our enterprise application portfolio, working with customers and IT staff and management to: ensure incoming requests are processed in a timely manner, conduct initial analyses of the requests, gather requirements, identify solutions and select the best one, prepare and deliver presentations to governance and leadership teams, and train and coach technical staff in requirements elicitation and management to ensure a smooth hand-off to the development team.
* Fit Gap analysis – In support of projects, perform fit-gap analysis on requirements to determine if and how new systems and data meet UNM business needs and identify gaps that need solutions. Collaborate with project managers and developers to determine how to mitigate gaps.
* Process mapping – Support and lead mapping of critical processes, both internal and external. Work with IT staff and business office customers to document current state practices. Develop standards and tips and tricks to share with others in the department. Coach technical staff in eliciting and documenting knowledge. Continue the development of this as a competency across the division.
* Requirements gathering and documentation – Support and lead gathering and documentation of requirements for projects large and small, internally-developed and commercial software, user-focused or behind-the-scenes. Work with IT staff and business office customers to elicit, verify, and validate requirements, and document them in a useful fashion. Develop standards and tips and tricks to share with others in the department. Coach technical staff in eliciting and documenting knowledge. Continue the development of this as a competency across the division.
* Requirements lifecycle – Take a lifecycle perspective on requirements, from analysis to execution to testing to support and maintenance. Work with Project Managers and Apps leadership to develop and implement standards for all phases of the requirements lifecycle.
Job Duties:
* Lead and establish Business Analysis standards and documentation for IT Applications.
* Develop Key Performance Measures and analysis for continuous improvement of Business Analysis processes and other IT Application’s processes and practices.
* Perform fit-gap analysis on requirements to determine if and how new systems and data meet UNM business needs and identify gaps that need solutions.
* Develop comprehensive software test scripts to ensure software can handle required tasks in real-world scenarios, according to specifications and requirements.
* Lead the Project Intake and
Initial Analysis processes for our enterprise application portfolio
* Perform requirements gathering,
analysis, documentation, and lifecycle management for complex/high
impact/high visibility projects. Refine and validate complex business
requirements, interdependencies, and potential risks and issues related to
technology projects.
* Coach and assist technical staff
in requirements elicitation, documentation, validation, verification, and
lifecycle management
* Perform process mapping for
complex/high impact/high visibility projects.
* Lead efforts to understand and
document current state, and facilitate and assist with designing future
state for complex/high impact/high visibility projects
* Act as a liaison between end-users
and IT teams on projects, business relationship efforts, and other
customer management processes
* Provide in-depth analysis
services and participate in process enhancement efforts with key partners
and stakeholders
* Lead the establishment of tools
and processes to gather, analyze, document, verify, validate, and manage
requirements.
* Analyze business processes to
identify opportunities and improve existing processes, often using
technology-based solutions. Gather, create, and document current and
future state business process flows. Identify opportunities and lead
implementation efforts for new functionality, modules, applications, and
third-party integrations.
* There is the potential to manage
small- and medium-sized projects as your workload and interests allow
* Learn new concepts and
technologies
* Participate in design and
solution-finding efforts.
* Document functional processes and
technical architectures.
* Write SOPs and training materials
when needed.
* Work with student employee and
other IT teams
Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Required soft skills:
* Must possess demonstrated facilitation and presentation skills, including the ability to organize and lead productive meetings and prepare and successfully present content to technical teams, business office teams, leadership teams, and senior executives
* Must possess demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications, including the ability to create various types of documents (project documents, requirements, SOPs, etc.) and diagrams (process flows, application architecture diagrams, system diagrams, data flow diagrams, etc.)
* Must possess demonstrated excellent listening, empathy, persuasion, and mediation skills, and be able to work productively with people at all levels of the enterprise and at all levels of business and technical expertise
* Must possess demonstrated attention to detail, critical thinking, ability to work independently and juggle competing demands. Must have excellent organization and follow-through skills, good judgement, and the ability and willingness to learn from mistakes. A good sense of humor is a plus.
* Must be comfortable in novel situations and graceful under pressure
Required technical skills:
* Must have a demonstrated fluency in the Microsoft Office tool suite: Word, Excel, Powerpoint
* Must be fluent in a diagramming tool such as Visio or LucidChart
* Must be comfortable with new concepts and technologies and able to quickly learn/teach yourself the basics of anything. This is an important requirement – you will be working on lots of new things and the ability to get yourself up to speed quickly is critical.
* A technical background such as web development or software development is helpful but not required. What is required is an interest in and aptitude for learning about technology and how things work, and a passion for finding elegant solutions that maximize utility while minimizing complexity and long-term support and maintenance burden.
