This position is responsible for providing excellent client service and compassionate, professional handling of a variety of client and staff interactions. The float VCA role will train to work independently in 10+ hospital services. Critical skills include communicating clearly, respectfully and professionally with internal and external clients. Communication methods include face to face, via telephone and in writing (typically in e-mail).
At times, this role may be asked to competently assist clinicians and other medical staff with light animal handling, equipment handling and sterilization procedures (autoclave and textile laundry).
Essential Functions
* Provide a caring, reliable and knowledgeable first contact point for clients and visitors.
* Assists DVM and CVT with intakes, discharges, client questions and scheduling for large and small animal hospitals.
* May assist with preparing patients for a variety of veterinary medical procedures.
* Assist with accurate electronic medical record keeping through detail oriented processing of necessary forms.
* Notify proper personnel of the client’s arrival following specific guidelines.
* Follow hospital guidelines for collecting payments and initiating the billing process.
* Triage incoming Small and Large animal emergency cases; utilize internal triage tracking system as appropriate.
* Process general information calls and emails by answering questions, taking messages and redirecting incoming calls (DVM’s students, veterinary technicians, etc.) in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care.
* Restrain and handle animals and/or assist with animal restraint and handling.
* Assists with client scheduling in multiple hospital services, acting as a bridge between owner of patient and clinician.
* Provides coverage for one to three holidays per year.
Other Functions:
* Maintains a clean environment in hospital area and ensures that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order.

Salary Range: $18.56 to $20.46

Required Qualifications:
High School diploma / GED and two (2) years of medical or veterinary office experience or medical appointment scheduling experience. Veterinary or medical training/education may be substituted for some of the years of experience. * Must have the ability to work in close proximity to a clinical environment with potential exposure to medical processes and materials (body fluids, syringes and needles, etc).
Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria:
* Veterinary call center, front desk, or admissions experience.
* Customer Service orientation, outstanding interpersonal skills, and problem solving skills.
* Effectively multi-tasks and reprioritize to meet job expectations.
* Willingness and ability to cross train and assist in other client areas as assigned. Experience with Microsoft Office programs or similar software. General knowledge of Excel spreadsheets.
The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine.
The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.
