General Description of Position
This nine-month position
requires the successful candidate to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, engage in scholarship, and participate in service.
The successful candidate will have expertise in secondary (grades 6–12) instructional methods in the fields of history/social studies,
art, or foreign language and be expected to:
a. consistently demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in
education;
b. teach undergraduate and graduate courses, providing quality instruction in face-to-face, online, and hybrid modes
of instruction, during the day and in the evenings;
c. supervise field-based student internships;
d. advise
undergraduate and graduate students;
e. mentor student research projects;
f. engage in scholarly activity; and
g. engage in service to the college, university, community, and broader professional disciplines.

is a public liberal arts and sciences university dedicated to effective teaching. A CAEP-accredited provider, the College of Education
offers a B.S.Ed in elementary education and programs in secondary education (biology, chemistry, computer science, English, Earth science,
history and social sciences, mathematics, and physics), PreK-12 education (theater arts, visual arts, music—vocal or instrumental, and
foreign language—French, German, Latin, and Spanish), and special education for undergraduate students. Additionally, the College of
Education offers six Master of Education (M.Ed.) programs for adults who have earned a bachelor’s degree and wish to obtain teaching
credentials in the areas of elementary education, secondary education, middle grades education, PreK-12 education, special education:
general curriculum, and special education: adapted curriculum. These programs are designed to meet the needs of adult learners, with courses
offered in the evenings and/or offered in a blended or online format. The College of Education recently moved into its newly-renovated home
in Seacobeck Hall, which includes state-of-the-art spaces for supporting future teachers like a makerspace, curriculum lab, model K-12
classroom, and team rooms. The appointee can look forward to joining a faculty of 12 who are committed to teaching, scholarship, and service
activities that prepare high-quality future teachers. The normal teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. In addition to the regular
annual 9-month contract, opportunities for summer teaching and research are available.
Recently recognized as a “Great
College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education, UMW is centrally located between Washington, DC and Richmond, VA. UMW was
founded in 1908 as a normal school, resulting in over a century of preparing teachers recognized in the surrounding areas for their
excellence. The College of Education has active partnerships with five surrounding school divisions; students complete practicum and
internship placements in these divisions, and faculty frequently are invited to collaborate with local teachers via grants or professional
development opportunities. Furthermore, the College of Education has recently piloted five Professional Development School (PDS)
partnerships to create strong clinical collaborations between area schools and the university.
