The Department of Entomology and Nematology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Teaching with a preferred emphasis in entomology and animal biology. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant Professor of Teaching position with potential for security of employment (similar to tenure-track). Participation in outreach programs and performance of University service are also expected.
An academic year (9-month) Assistant Professor of Teaching (also known as Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, or LPSOE) position is available in the Department of Entomology and Nematology (https://entomology.ucdavis.edu/), College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, with a focus on instruction in entomology and animal biology. Expertise in entomology or a related discipline is required. The appointee will be expected to carry out high-quality and innovative teaching in subjects supporting the Entomology (https://www.ucdavis.edu/majors/entomology) and Animal Biology (https://abi.ucdavis.edu/) majors and consistent with the broad goals of the department. The appointee will be required to teach up to five undergraduate courses per year in departmental undergraduate curricula as assigned by the department chair. Teaching assignments will be based on enrollment, units, scope (classroom, field, laboratory), and needs of the department.
The appointee will play a key role in the Animal Biology (ABI) major through instruction in one or more of the core courses ABI 50A, 50B, 50C, and 187 (https://abi.ucdavis.edu/major-course-descriptions). Additional courses in the Entomology major will be assigned based on the candidate’s area of expertise and departmental need, but could include Natural History of Insects (ENT 10) and General Entomology (ENT 100, ENT 100L). The appointee will also provide guidance (ABI 189, 189D) for individual students as they design and undertake their Animal Biology research practicum with a faculty member.
The appointee will also be expected to demonstrate continued professional growth and contribute to the University mission through service activities. Examples of professional growth will involve some combination of the following professional contributions and attainments, as guided by the department: (i) research and publication in the candidate’s subject-matter discipline, (ii) pedagogical or curricular innovation, (iii) research and publication on pedagogy, (iv) activity in professional organizations, and (v) academic leadership within the University beyond normal service obligations. The appointee will have a leadership role in the scholarship of teaching and learning, working with Entomology and Nematology and other faculty at UC Davis to develop, implement and assess new pedagogical initiatives. Examples of activities within such a research program include, but are not limited to: assessing and improving existing ABI and ENT courses and identifying needs for new courses or new types of course material delivery; mentoring students to enhance their communication and public engagement skills; developing and assessing the efficacy of STEM mentoring programs aimed at increasing diversity and inclusion in STEM fields; formulating and evaluating major and course learning outcomes; advancing scientific literacy; quantifying the efficacy of majors such as ABI and ENT in guiding students toward careers. The appointee will also be expected to demonstrate continued professional growth and contribute to the university mission through service activities including student advising.
This recruitment is conducted at the Assistant Professor of Teaching rank (=Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, LPSOE). The resulting hire will be at the Assistant Professor (LPSOE) rank, regardless of the proposed appointee’s qualifications.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Entomology or a related discipline (degree must be awarded by start of appointment).
* Evidence of teaching excellence is expected.
* The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate courses and the ability to conduct extramurally funded research as it relates to instruction in Entomology, Animal Biology or related disciplines.
* Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
* Other preferred qualifications include documented success in some or all of the following areas: teaching large undergraduate classes, use of evidence-based teaching practices, use of modern instructional technology, ability to identify and develop effective teaching strategies for diverse student populations.
