Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) offers a range of academic, cocurricular, and enrichment programs-including the Data Science major and minor-with a wide-reaching impact both across UC Berkeley and beyond. Designed in collaboration with faculty from across Berkeley, Data Science invests students with deep technical knowledge, expertise in how to apply that
knowledge in a field of their choosing, and an understanding of the social and human contexts and ethical implications of how data are collected, analyzed, and used. This combination positions graduates to help inform and develop solutions to a range of pressing challenges, from adapting industry to a new world of data to amplifying learning in education to helping communities recover from disaster.

DSUS is part of the College of Computing, Data Science and Society (CDSS), which strives to develop, implement, and share high-quality, ethics-oriented, and accessible curricula, educating a diverse student body in data science, computing, and statistics. UC Berkeley Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) has been pioneering an open source teaching stack with many components. This position would be responsible for software maintenance and development. Technical knowledge would include programming in Python, knowledge of the Data Science software stack, knowledge of Github, and familiarity with course infrastructure. This position would be responsible for supporting and training instructors, administrative staff, students on course staff, and enrolled students who all interact with the teaching stack software. This role would create staff resilience to support key elements of course infrastructure across classes and time, since students on course staff may change each semester.

• Designs, develops, modifies, debugs, and deploys complex software and scripts to support curriculum deployment and operation of Data Science courses.
• Performs complex data analysis and evaluates the design and use of data sources within the curriculum framework.
• Monitors software development with source code control techniques and configuration management to maintain integrity and track changes.
• Executes detailed testing of software and curriculum-related tools to ensure proper operation and adherence to test plans, guaranteeing functionality and user experience.
• Manages the integration of interconnected open-source packages within the curriculum, ensuring version compatibility and seamless operation across various components.
• Implements workflows for autograding and PDF generation to streamline the assessment and resource distribution processes.
• Conducts thorough debugging of the curriculum and its deployment mechanisms before release, ensuring high-quality educational content free from errors.
• Ensures interoperability between the curriculum, servers, and grading frameworks to support a smooth, efficient educational experience for thousands of students.

• Identifies, evaluates, and develops a socio-technical course deployment system for use in Data Science courses.
• Curates workflow for curriculum deployment through to end users.
• Supports faculty and instructional staff in maintaining and documenting workflows.
• Develops processes and procedures, ensuring that the system and processes are usable by faculty lecturers, TAs, and work with server staff.
• Provides continuity and documentation for keeping classes running smoothly semester to semester.
• Responsible for open source teaching stack, including website, textbooks, teaching packages, and grading workflows.

• Troubleshoots and resolves complex technical issues related to the Data Science classes.
• Designs and manages the workflow of support requests, including setting priorities and tracking issue resolution.
• Serves as the primary point of communication among faculty, departmental IT, and campus IT to ensure cohesive support and problem-solving.
• Demonstrates mastery of various systems integral to Data Science classes, with a clear understanding of escalation procedures and key contacts for resolving specific problems.

• Employs scripting to enhance the efficiency of teaching Data Science classes at scale, particularly for managing large class enrollments.

The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800 – $114,700, not to exceed $158,200 (grade 23).
