DESCRIPTION
For over 30 years, the UCSD Mother Child Adolescent HIV Program has provided comprehensive and integrated HIV care, social services, and clinical research to pregnant people, women, children, and youth. A multidisciplinary team of HIV specialists provides medical care and treatment, health education, case management, behavioral health services, and clinical research opportunities. All services strive to be trauma-informed, developmentally tailored, LGBTQIA+ affirming, culturally sensitive, and gender-responsive.
The role of the Peer Navigator is to provide support to youth through a project focused on providing affirming care to LGBTQIA+ youth with HIV. The Peer navigators serve on the health care team to provide patients with information, support, and assistance in navigating services. The incumbent works directly with patients and the interdisciplinary healthcare team (e.g., case managers, therapists, and medical providers) to engage and support youth in HIV care. Duties include providing health education, greeting and navigating clients through the clinic, lab, and pharmacy, appointment reminders, transportation assistance, providing peer-based empathy and emotional support, linking and sustaining new patients in HIV care, communicating with the HIV care team, community outreach, youth social events, contributing to project workgroup, and facilitating youth feedback.
The incumbent Uses professional community educational program concepts to deliver standardized educational and volunteer educational programs. Applies established procedures and programs to address county program educational needs that are limited in scope. Follows standard practices in analyzing program content and delivery needs and determining the effectiveness of current programs. Receives detailed instructions on all assignments. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge or experience in program content and objectives. Knowledge of how to deliver educational programs in a variety of settings.
Strong organizational skills to develop a project plan, monitor plans against established deadlines, and review and analyze results.
Basic effective reading, verbal, written communication, and presentation skills to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to maintain positive interactions with others and work cooperatively.
Experience using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
Direct experience with HIV treatment and care.
Knowledge of the physical, emotional, social, and financial impact of HIV.
Familiarity with the local community and available resources for youth with HIV.
Ability to work with interdisciplinary professionals as part of an HIV care team; committed to collaborating with others to improve HIV care.
Ability to reflect on and apply lived experience.
Good communication skills, and ability to engage youth with HIV.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $32,100 – $69,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $15.37 – $33.19
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
