DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Master of Advanced Study (MAS) is a fully accredited master’s degree, conferred by the University of California, San Diego and housed in the Jacobs School of Engineering. Under a statewide project of the University of California, the MAS credential was introduced in January 2001 in response to the need to expand career potential and bring academic rigor to professionals in various fields. The self-funded MAS degree program is typically tailored to the lifestyle and level of experience of working professionals and may be taken on a full- or part-time basis. Currently there are four MAS degree programs: Wireless Embedded Systems; Medical Device Engineering; Architecture-Based Systems Engineering; and Data Science and Engineering. These two year programs are designed for working engineering professionals.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Director of Executive Education, the Master of Advanced Study (MAS) Program Advisor independently applies professional Student Services concepts in support of the Master of Advanced Study degree program. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Within assigned degree programs/cohorts, the MAS performs the following: scheduling and confirming courses, rooms, faculty, catering, etc. as well as organizing workshops, lunch lecture series, student events, and off-campus activities, preparing TED pages, arranging for lecture capture support, advising students, processing applications, troubleshooting and resolving student issues. While planning and implementing programs, this position has direct contact with business leaders and working professionals, UC San Diego campus administrators, faculty, alumni, and industry partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from college and two (2) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Proven ability to counsel students on program requirements, career opportunities, etc.

• Professional experience in a university or other setting, planning and administering educational courses and/or training programs.

• Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

• Experience with current promotion media tools, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.

• Advanced skill in using word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation and web maintenance software, preferably in MS Office. Knowledge of modern office machines, procedures and processes and filing systems.

• Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of university systems and structures as well as graduate degree policies and procedures.

• Understanding of University rules and regulations.

• Strong Interpersonal skills.

• Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

• Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.

• Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality in a variety of areas and handle sensitive matters discreetly and tactfully.

• Demonstrated ability to conceive and conduct promotional efforts, identifying potential customers and attracting them to a specific product.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Must be available on occasional evenings and alternating Saturdays for scheduled events and workshops.

• CA drivers license & insurance required.

• Must be able to lift and carry items in order to transport items (brochures, supplies) to events.
