This is an on-site position at the UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute in La Jolla, California.
DESCRIPTION
The Parkinson and Other Movement Disorder Center is dedicated to provide a multidisciplinary and personalized approach for the care of patients with these disorders. The Center includes in addition to movement disorder specialists, social worker, rehabilitation team, neuropsychology, neurosurgery, nurse practitioner, clinical coordinator, and team of research coordinators who meet weekly for discussion of patients. The Center conducts state of the art research that patients can participate if they meet study criteria. It has an outreach program and conducts biannual seminars for the community.
Under direction of the director, the Program Research Manager will be responsible for the overall management and monitoring of all the clinical trials for the POMDC. The incumbent will provide independent contributions as well as original ideas pertaining to the planning and development of research studies related to Parkinson’s disease (PD), Dementia, and atypical parkinsonian disorders such as: progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), Lewy body disease and other related disorders.
The Program Manager will make significant innovative contributions in developing and implementing policies and procedures, including developing clinical trials start-up processes. Responsibilities include full oversight of the clinical research staff including performance management, oversight of daily operations and programmatic workflow project, this includes coordinating the management all aspects of research protocols and clinical trials, reporting to and working with study sponsors. Assign work, train and provide guidance to new and continuing study staff. Direct subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures and policies. In collaboration with the center director, the incumbent will plan, identify and develop new investigator trials. Participate in long range planning and secure methods of POMDC growth. Responsible for organizing and moderating team meetings, as well as sponsor meetings and in-services for ACTRI staff.
Supervises staff responsible for working with departments, staff, patients and families in using clinical research techniques. May assume full responsibility for the research in delegated studies. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them. Supervises daily operations, and performance requirements. Has full oversight for staffing, performance management, and programmatic workflow of project.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nine (9) years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus five (5) years of applicable experience or equivalent experience / training.
Broad knowledge of clinical or laboratory research and clinical research philosophy. Demonstrated ability to translate clinical research philosophy into business best practices in a trial setting. Makes important original contributions in the area of research, pertaining to the operational of clinical research including refining tasks and implementing new systems.
Demonstrated project management skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize projects and meet the demands of a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Adaptable to quickly changing priorities.
Demonstrated experience managing people with a wide range of educational backgrounds and skills. Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others. Demonstrated experience in training others in the field of research.
Demonstrates good problem-solving and analytical skills. Creatively addresses complex or new problems. Participate in problem solving and conflict resolution. Troubleshoot problems as necessary.
Strong communicator; includes verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Clear and concise communicator. Ability to influence and negotiate. Advance demonstrated writing excellence including preparation of official documents and correspondence for the Principal Investigator.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including but not limited to: problem-solving, teamwork development, leadership, mentorship. Interpersonal skills to effectively motivate others. Works well with others to achieve common goals. Ability to cultivate relationships with multiple stakeholders at various levels of administration.
Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Effectively uses campus’ clinical information and documentation application programs. Proven ability utilizing clinical trial management systems.
Skills to work collaboratively with other cross-functional teams. Ability to interface and collaborate with other members of an extended study team. Ability to influence / persuade. Proven ability to effectively coordinate and integrate programs with others in division, department, and organization.
Advance knowledgeable of human resource policies and procedures including bargaining unit represented employees.
Must possess strong leadership, organizational, planning and management skills.
Demonstrated ability to lead a group of highly trained professionals, delegate tasks, monitor productivity, and keep them focused on the mission of the organization.

Annual Full Pay Range: $71,000 – $160,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $34.00 – $76.63
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
