This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite in La Jolla and remote.
DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the PI, the HEAR Mental Health Counselor will implement all aspects of the UCSD medical and pharmacy student, resident, staff and faculty suicide prevention program (HEAR) to identify, evaluate, counsel and refer trainees and providers with burnout, depression and/or at risk for suicide within the Department of Psychiatry. Responsibilities will include providing: screening, assessment, clinical and psychosocial evaluation, crisis intervention, counseling and treatment for UCSD students, trainees and providers with a spectrum of mental health conditions and issues; initial online screening followed by video, audio or face-to-face assessment; further evaluation, support and treatment for participants who screen positive for burnout, depression or suicide risk; referrals to other mental health professionals as appropriate; and clinical follow up. The Mental Health Counselor will oversee the HEAR outreach program; help maintain the HEAR database; consent, administer and follow participants in the HEAR research protocols; participate in presentations and manuscript preparation; and prepare reports as needed. The Mental Health Counselor will also serve as a liaison for all participants and the HEAR project team, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, UCSD IRB, the UCSD Care for the Caregivers program, Student Counseling and College Mental Health, Risk Management, the Physician’s Wellbeing Committee, the Employers Assistance Program, Outpatient Psychiatry and other related programs. Complete other assignments as directed by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree in Social Work and possession of the requirements necessary for application for licensure as a Clinical Social Worker.
Proven knowledge of the principles and practices of social work to counsel individuals to provide psychotherapeutic services to patients/clients settings to assist them in adjusting to the physical/psychological difficulties associated with illness.
Proven effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling to support individuals and provide psychotherapeutic services to health care trainees and providers to assist them in adjusting to the emotional/psychological difficulties associated with work stress.
Proven ability to prioritize workload and work independently.
Proven ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written.
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
Proven ability to work individually and as a member of a team.
Proven ability to assist with mental health referrals by coordinating with the HEAR counselors, UCSD Department of Psychiatry and community mental health professionals and services.
Proven ability to provide screening, assessment, clinical and psychosocial evaluation, crisis intervention, counseling and treatment for UCSD students, trainees and providers with a spectrum of mental health conditions and issues.
Demonstrated experience in preparing required progress and adverse event reports in compliance with all federal, state and institutional regulations.
Proven ability to maintain positive referral relationships with relevant UC San Diego and community mental health programs.
Demonstrated experience in clinical research.
Demonstrated experience in preparing Institutional Review Board materials, including writing human subjects applications, amending applications, and preparing required progress and adverse event reports in compliance with all federal, state and institutional regulations.
Demonstrated experience with research data entry techniques and software.
Demonstrated familiarity with administering and scoring psychological assessments.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be willing to work with HEAR participants who may be experiencing school, work or home-related stress.
Must be willing to work in close proximity to study participants and other staff of the UC San Diego HEAR program.
Must have ready access to reliable transportation and be willing to perform digital and phone interviews off site.
Must be able to work flexible hours such as evenings and weekends as needed.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $80,346 – $105,846 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $38.48 – $50.69
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
