Purpose
Provide care and general welfare throughout the cycle of care for patients served in the Oncology Clinic at UT Health Austin to include answering questions, providing support and education as needed, as well as acting as a liaison between patients, families and the providers as required.
Responsibilities
Delivers nursing interventions to assigned oncology patients that are consistent with stated medical plan of care utilizing the nursing process to assess, implement, and record patients’ response in the medical record.
Accurately triages telephone calls received from patients, caregiver, or other members of the healthcare team. Utilizes databases and best practice evidence available, as well as clinical judgment to determine purpose of the call. Reviews relevant health care information; documenting the purpose, information and resultant disposition of the call. Supports medication refills, medication questions, patient education, explanation of discharge instructions or instructions on procedures, critical labs resolutions, communication with medical providers and nurse triage for symptom-based patient calls for patients of all ages.
Considers the patients’ physical, cultural, psycho-social, and spiritual and age specific needs when planning care or direction toward treatment or call resolution. Monitors patient needs and proactively connects members with the appropriate services or contacts other departments or locations to assist with coordination of care of the patient.
Prepares equipment and assists physicians during physical exams and medical procedures. Prepares and administers medications as prescribed by physician. Inspects equipment and facilities visually and physically to ensure patient safety and proper functioning of equipment. Maintains adequate stock of supplies as required for work area.
Ensures appropriate patient consents and authorizations are obtained for research and/or medical treatment. Schedules patients’ appointments, tests, and procedures via on-line computer system or telephone, and reinforces physician instructions in person and through telephone contact. Maintains efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
Works with prescribing providers to develop and implement opioid prescribing standards. Monitors care processes for opioid prescription management. Documents opioid management consistent with opioid prescribing standards.

Required Qualifications
Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing. Three years of general nursing experience with some administrative experience. Current CPR certification. Three years’ experience in oncology, supportive care, or palliative care outpatient clinical practice. Ability to work efficiently and flexibly in a fast-paced environment with minimal guidance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Outstanding organizational and time-management skills. Ability to address individuals and information with a high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality in various delicate, formal, or urgent situations. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, staff, and patients. Must be comfortable and flexible with changing priorities and self-directed problem solving. Preferred Qualifications
Three (3) or more years of experience in oncology outpatient clinical practice. Bilingual in English and Spanish. Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (or will be provided with). Experience working with caregivers. Experience with research activities. Experience delivering care through a multidisciplinary team. Proficiency using Athena electronic medical records. Experience tracking, measuring, and using patient reported outcomes in developing treatment plans for patients.
Salary Range
$80,000 + depending on qualifications
