Stony Brook University’s Department of Computer Science invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position with an expected starting date of Fall 2024. The candidate will hold the position of assistant or associate depending on qualifications. We are interested in candidates with backgrounds in all areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning, broadly defined, including computer vision, NLP, and robotics. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise on generative models in software engineering and application areas such as mental health.
The Assistant/Associate Professor will be responsible for providing comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional education in their field of expertise in alignment with the departmental academic programs to produce the next generation of computer scientists and computer professionals. They will advise dissertation research of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. They will guide the student’s professional preparation and career development under their mentorship. They will engage in scholarly research and publications in their field. They will develop independent or collaborative grant proposals to support their research and students under their mentorship. They will help advance the department’s research and academic portfolio. The Assistant/Associate Professor will also perform departmental and university services such as administering academic programs and academic research enterprise, new program development, faculty and student development, economic development, student advising and recruiting.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline. Outstanding scholarly records and stellar potential in the field of study. Demonstration of a commitment to teaching and mentoring.
Preferred Qualifications:
Background in artificial intelligence or machine learning, broadly defined, including computer vision, NLP, and robotics. Expertise in generative models in software engineering. Expertise in application areas such as mental health. Potential to develop a funded research program.

Department Description: The Department of Computer Science currently has 60 full-time faculty members and is undergoing a period of rapid growth. The department is housed in a new state-of-the-art 70,000 sq ft building and also occupies parts of other buildings. The department is either home to or has significant partnerships with several interdisciplinary centers on campus with our faculty playing leadership roles. They include the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation, National Security Institute (NSI), Center for Visual Computing (CVC), Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), and Institute of Advanced Computational Science (IACS).
