Position Summary:
The Part-Time Fabrication Technician supports operational aspects related
to the use of fabrication facilities including safety, access, and supervision
of student assistants. The technician is responsible for general maintenance of
equipment, and the coordination of efforts related to classwork. The
fabrication facilities include wood and metal shop, laser-cutting room,
electronics lab and CNC equipment, including a 7-axis robotic arm. The
technician will support and enforce a culture of safety in compliance with NJIT
policies and OSHA standards.
The Fabrication Technician’s primary roles are to:
Maintain the shops upkeep, troubleshoot, and maintain machines for smooth
operations, and be a resource for students and faculty. The technician will
enforce safety and provide basic education regarding how to use tools properly
and for their intended uses. The technician will have a design sense, and offer
guidance regarding how to approach projects, which fabrication techniques would
be best suited for their project, material recommendations, and design
critiques.
Essential Functions:
– Support lab safety training and
instructional learning related to fabrication and prototyping.
– Assist students and faculty with
coursework and research projects.
– Be responsible for general lab
safety and appropriate waste management.
– Communicate any needs for
maintaining and repairing equipment and instructional materials.
– Report on lab usage peak times to
develop an appropriate schedule for usage.
Additional Functions:
– Ensure that all labs are properly cleaned at the end of each semester in
preparation for the next semester.
– Coordinate activities
needed to support successful participation in HCAD educational activities and
events, such as the Summer Program.
– Perform other duties as
assigned by the Fabrication Manager, Dean or the Director of Administration.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree in architecture or industrial/Product Design, or
Engineering. At least one year of experience in digital fabrication,
woodworking, laser cutting, CNC machine operation and appropriate software as
required.
– Hands on fabrication skills including, but not limited to, experience
with 3D printing, manual and CNC milling and turning, and metalwork.
– Understanding how to translate 2D forms into 3D.
– Understanding of Design and
an eye for detail.
– Has experience with multiple materials and various
manufacturing processes.
– Model making skills. Mechanically inclined with an
understanding of how things work and the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose
problems with shop equipment and student projects.
– At the university’s discretion, the education and experience
prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the
satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and
experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience mentoring or teaching in an
educational environment is a plus.
